I Issue a Pick making Challenge!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

I can't help but wonder what kind of crazy adventures my pick is having out loose in the vast world of USPS :P

I mailed mine out yesterday morning. Bear in mind that USPS regulations prohibit indicating the contents of packages containing auto tryout keys or lockpicks, so I put "ATTN: contest" on mine to avoid delays. :)

You're also not supposed to mail picks to anyone other than "bona-fide locksmiths" via USPS, so it's a good thing Schuyler's one of those as far as we know, amirite?

I am having a bit of a hard time making mine...I may ave to withdraw due to my current work schedule. I have been working from 6:00 am to 7 pm just about everyday, on top of which I am moving into my new place. I could send a mediocre one, but what is the point? I withdraw

......man, I was really excited about this but work is killing me. So is moving.
lame, lame, lame.

I reread the thread, but I don't see any mention of what locks they are to be tested on. Is it going to be tested only on one keyway, or as many different ones as you choose. I assume the goal here is to make a pick that is as universal as possible, but I had to ask. Care to give us a hint?

I made a short hook cause they are the quickest to make and I was worried about not having enough time. Anyway, everybody loves short hooks.

They will be compared against a comparable commercial pick. Each judge will get to test it against his or her preferred lock, but the comparison will be made against as exact a commercial duplicate as we can manage.

Ray/Legion - I have received both of your picks. Looking good!

I need to drop out of the comp I keep trying to make picks but with a broke finger its to hard to make. I cant hold the tools to make it and sanding is out of the question. The few picks I made are not comp material so I'm really sorry to waste anyones time.

I have 4 entries...

We had one lost in the mail, who has received an extension as a result, so hopefully that will make for 5, and I know a 6th is on it's way presently.

I've been dealing with some moving issues (ended up having to get a storage unit / crash with friends, bleh) and will send out the meeting email to all the TOOOL Boston crew on the 31st (Sunday) so that we can organize a day to get together to judge the picks.

Personally - I am inclined to allow any pick that arrives before TOOOL Boston actually sit down to do the picking into the competition, late to the submission deadline or not. We have (maybe!) 6 of 18 submissions at the moment.

The list:

1. Locknewbie21
2. ToolyMcgee
3. djslacker
4. criminalhate
5. Olson Burry
6. jk_the_cjer
7. Legion303
8. Gibraltar
9. ady1989
10. ratyoke
11. jamesphilhulk2
12. ArtKRP
13. Brianpojo56

15. Cheesehead

17. David_Parker
18. Freakparade3

Bold are people who's picks are sitting in the contest box next to me here. Struck through are people who have officially stepped out of the competition (if I missed any, please let me know) and italicized are folks who have already been granted an extension, Brian because his pick is somewhere in the USPS and Tooly because none of us realized that the 31st was a Sunday and then Labor day followed - which was poor timing organizationally, so his pick is in the mail.

Anyway - a lot of folks haven't submitted or posted their intentions yet. I'm hoping more pour in, but I'm going to schedule the TOOOL Meeting for as soon as everyone can get together after the 31st, as I don't want to leave anyone in suspense here.

Also - I will start posting photos and details of all of the picks submitted on the 1st so the community can deliberate the other 2 categories (innovation and style), though we'll hold off voting until the day of the TOOOL Meeting, just in case any late entries make it through in time.

Sound good to everyone?

MAKE THOSE PICKS!

My new pick is now in the hands of USPS again. May the Great Locksmith above guide it on its way with accuracy and speed.

Nice work!
How did you do most of the shaping?

I can imagine it would be a b*tch to make the end of the pick.
