I've found the retaining screw on the left side of the shackle and removed it but can't seem to get the protec core out. Is there something I'm missing?

You need to remove the guard plate in the front. It screws out once the retaining screw is removed.

datagram, I have pictures in my blog about these things and if you like to use them in LockWiki, be my guest :) All that is needed is to just mention my name as the photographer, otherwise they are free to use.

Was able to take the core out combined with the fun of dropping it and scattering all the parts all over the floor

Took me a good 4 hours to figure out how to put the protec core back together and decode the key/discs in order to get my lock working again. At least I had fun and learned something new in the process. Its a very simple yet ingenious design this lock.

Yeah that lock is fun to get back together after dropping everything. At least now you know to be careful pulling out the core.

Welcome to my world xD

I've cut 15 of these bad boys now. Out of those 15 I must have mixed up the discs on at least 8 of them. I admit, it's not fun to re-disc them, but after about the 4th one I had a good method. Han's Abloy paper helps A LOT since it shows the differn't coded discs, and the key cuts, so you can pretty much match them up by eye.

I'm definitely glad it happened, because I would have had to learn how to do it one day.

As for the problem you had removing the core, I hadn't had that at all..... but I have heard of quite a few people having the problem. I kind of wish I did, so I would know how to answer the question as I still am not sure why they tend to get stuck..... there's nothing there to cause it as far as I can see since the core has to go in some how when it's made?! most strange.

I guess people just don't expect a thread on the round piece that holds the plug in, they would expect it to come out once they removed the hex screw?

Anyway, I also agree a Protec padlock is a nice puzzle :)

I used a combination of Han Fey's article on protec to decode the key and discs and then used the decription on tjweaver84's website to help me figure out where everything went. Somethings like which way on the discs are up are quite confusing

The raised centre of the disc faces in to the barrel ;)

Also, on the clockwise turn exec's/disklocks the spacers have to be the right way too, otherwise the locking bars won't set properly.
