Schlages recode-able lock?

Postby FarmerFreak » 19 Sep 2009 8:32

I have heard rumor that Schlage is going to sell a recode-able lock soon. I haven't heard anything official about this lock,...though I haven't tried to contact a Schlage rep.

I went on a patent search and this is what I found.
http://www.google.com/patents?id=wbixAA ... q=&f=false

It looks interesting, I think it has exploits that I can take advantage of. If they make it out of brass or stronger, it probably won't have the forcing issues that kwiksets have. But we will have to wait and see on that.

Have you guys heard anything about these?

Looks very cool: thanks for the link!

For whatever reason, I'm getting an error while trying to download the PDF of that patent from Google. On the off-chance that anyone else is as much of a lock geek as me (and keeps a library of all of this stuff), you can download the patent from here: http://www.pat2pdf.org/patents/pat20080314106.pdf :)

It'll be in Home Depot by the end of this month.

Looks like the "C" keyway to me. My guess is that it is a special key that is needed to re-combinate the cylinder. I noticed that part of it's milling extends beyond the shoulder towards the tip.

Perhaps this is needed to detach the key pins from the sidebar pins?

I spent some time reading through a bunch of this just to confirm what my eyes where telling me.

In short, yes it uses a special change key to re-key the lock.

Long answer, but nowhere near as long as in the patent papers.
It requires 2 change keys to change the lock. One for the existing key and one cut to the new combination.

When entering the changing mode, the keyway gets thinner.
To get it into that mode:
1.The lock needs to be turned to the correct position
2.There are two tabs that need to be pressed towards the back of the lock (one is from the tip of the key, the other is from the side of the key)
3.The keyway has to be allowed to get thinner.

At that point you can take that key out, put in another special thin change key and turn it back. Then you're done changing the lock.

Patent filed at the end of last year. Guess we won't be seeing these on the shelves of Home Depot any time soon.

I've heard 2 or 3 months from Schlage, but that could be wrong.

I saw a tv commercial yesterday that was for a lock called the schlage LINK, apparently a lock that you can open by telephone from remote locations, such as when a family member is locked out or a scheduled service man needs to enter.

I hadn't seen it mentioned here, though it may have been.
would you trust a lock that can be opened by a telephone call? shoulder surfers, bored NSA homeland evesdroppers, and others can easily crack this, and what if you misplace or have your phone stolen with that in the numbers list.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

I saw that same commercial Rai.
...And I thought....Why?!?!
Seems to me this problem was already taken care of with push button entry locks...that Schlage sells.

It looks like an act of desperation to me. Guess Schlage is hurting too economically.
