Concerning the number of possible codes, it's 1287 for a 5 digit combo. I have a Excel file with all of them listed.

I don't know, but maybe your calculation is wrong or my Excel file is wrong. But I don't think that my excel file is wrong. I did not see any redundancy, and all the combo might exist.
I consider that I have the digits 0123456789XYZ (which is the case for the Digital locks we have in France), and a 5 digits combo.

Locks are different, you also have some locks with less or more buttons.
And I already saw such a lock which needed to push 2 times the same button. I tried several times without pushing 2 times, it did not work, I don't know how it worked exactly...

Unfortunately, I think we cannot determine the number of possible combos in general, because there are a lot of different locks.

Ah, I think that Jaakko was assuming just digits 0 through 9. (I had made the same assumption myself.)

You are quite correct: with thirteen single-press buttons to choose from, there are a total of 1287 unique combinations with 5 digits.

Ah, that explains it With 13 buttons it is 8192 different combinations, so it would take much more to go through the obvious ones.

Concerning the button that needed to be pushed twice, I was really surprised. I'm sure it was a totally mechanical lock. But as I could not take it apart, I don't know how it worked. (It was an in-use lock) and unfortunately I can't remember the brand.

Maybe each back plate has 3 possible positions, non touched, pushed 1, pushed twice. That what I guess.
