Problem with Brinks resettable lock

Postby Indigo2 » 22 Mar 2010 20:07

Hello everyone,

This isn't exactly about picking a lock, but I thought someone here might be able to help. Today I bought a Brinks resettable combination lock (Amazon page: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P3ZJF8/ref=asc_df_B000P3ZJF81064403?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=dealt414104-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B000P3ZJF8). The combination is set at 0 0 0 0 to start with, and when I tried to change it, something went wrong. The hasp will not lift up; it is stuck in the "down" position. I can turn it from side to side but I can't lift the hasp up to lock it. I can't change the combination because the top three wheels won't turn, and the last one only turns with difficulty. I searched Google and found someone with a similar problem, and they really did a better job explaining what is wrong than I can:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Discuss:How_do_you_reset_a_lock_combination_for_a_brinks_resettable_2_inch_brass_lock
"I have this lock and for some reason it is stuck in the open position. It will only turn in the "down" position and this will not clear the top of the lock to allow me to close it. Nothing seems to work, including resetting the combination as noted above. The lock worked fine for a few days (it's almost new) but is now, of course, useless. Anyone have any ideas (aside from returning the lock)"

I have messed with it quite a bit, even tried throwing it (just in case something inside was stuck you know  ), nothing has worked. I'm pretty annoyed now and if I can't fix it, I'm going to take it back and try to find a different brand, unfortunately Brinks was the only brand I saw that had this sort of lock.

Okay, I just ended up taking it back and getting a different type. I liked the other type better but if they're going to break like that, I don't want anything to do with them! The new one works fine even though it feels a little more flimsy, oh well.

Generally combanation locks like these are not intended for high security application.

So hopefully it is not going to secure anything of high value.

Sounds like you didn't have the correct code. If you couldn't enter any more codes due to stuck wheels then that does pose a problem. There are other ways to open these other than entering the code. You can do it with a lockpick slid in next to a wheel to lift the appropriate part in the lock or you can sometimes use padlock shims to open them. The first method always works, the second method only works part of the time.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!
