Today, I finally managed to get to the point at which I can consistently pick a MasterLock No. 532.

Best part? I opened it with tools I made by hand. Now that is a special kind of feeling.

If you have any suggestions for what I should pick next, PM me and I'll get to work on it!

This weekend I picked up two new padlocks to practice on. Both look very similar:

Brinks: http://www.lockpeople.com/brinks/Produc ... 20Padlocks
Master: http://www.masterlock.com/apps/masterlo ... l|security

Both cost about the same, $20 each, and state they secure padlocks, but that's where the similarities end.

I tried the Brinks lock first, since it was only zip tied to a cardboard back, and could be returned if it was to easy to pick. So far I have only managed to set 3 or 4 pins before I loose track of where I am in the cylinder. It also feels like all 6 pins are serrated.

Today, I thought I would bring the Master 6230to work with me to work on during my break. Now I am no master of Pick-Fu, but I have to say the Master 6230 was rediculously easy to pick. I was able to pick it in less than a minute using a short hook.
Closer inspecion reveals there are only 5 pins, none of which are serrated! What a rip-off!

Master is generally WEAK.

Try an American, those are more challenging :)

No kidding they are weak. I've been looking for more challenging locks, and would like to get my hands on an American or even a BEST padlock. I've got a few BEST cores, but would like something to put them in.

I did manage to open the Brinks lock I posted the link for, as well as another Brinks I picked up this weekend. Both have at least 3 or more serrated pins. Although, the description states it has spooled pins.

Are you sure you aren't confused about the difference between spool and serrated pins? Serrated pins have shallow little grooves cut in them, whereas spool pins have a much more pronounced grooves cut into them.

Here are a couple of pictures for comparison:

Spool

Serrated

I've found that, in cheaper padlocks, spool pins are more common by far than serrated pins. Certainly in Master and Brinks padlocks.
