Your Most Unusual Padlock

I just started picking padlocks a couple weeks ago although I have been collecting unusual locks for the past few years. My most unusual one is this Navy lock that I bought at the flea market, it was used for securing weapons and needs two different keys to open:







I haven't been able to pick it yet, but I haven't spent much time on it.

I don't think you'll be picking that lock any time soon unless you can pick 6 pin Medeco cylinders. It uses the same cylinders as the S&G 831 padlock.

btw, they never assigned a National Stock Number (NSN) to this model. Yours, the most common type, is a Style 1, there was also a Style 2 and Style 3.

Yah, squelchys the gotoguy on a lot of stuff, so I looked at his profile and on page 144 or his posts are his earliest ones, he was a real newbie in '06. Hes been to all the Cons, and ive been to none of them yet.
he appears to have loaded with a lot of information and experience since then. He must have put in a solid lot of time at picking reseaching and collecting locks since then, as well as getting to know the other pickers here.

You too can learn a lot here, and just from squelchs posts.

Thanks for posting the image from the service manual. My lock has three keys, two with round heads that each work in cylinders A or B, and the third has a square head that says 'control key' on it, and it just works in one of the cylinders. Under the name medeco on each of the keys is a number that has been x'ed out, and under that is a new number that has been stamped, so it looks like it's been rekeyed.

I've been told that this lock is worth between $500-$1000, can someone narrow that down based on the above information?

You see those 2 holes in your shackle? they were for permanently mounting the shackle to the hasp, and in order to open the door, you removed the padlock body, not the hasp. The padlock would simply drop down and there would be room to separate the hasp parts. I have an instructional manual drawing of it kicking around here somewhere.

The XXX's over the numbers on the keys meant that they were retired from use. Not sure if it meant that it was rekeyed. Sometimes you'll see numbers X'd out and new number above them or next to them, meaning they just renumbered the keys based on the in house chart they kept in their key cabinet. (This is based on afaik (as far as I know) info.) Your keys bother me because I don't believe your lock needed a square head control key.. You just remove the shackle and then use a punch to knock out that small pin on the side of the lock and remove the cover. So you might be right that the keys came from another lock such as 831 which used the same keyway but also used a square head control key. If your control key also has a notch cut out of the keyblade near the bow, that makes it a Hi-Shear LK1200 padlock control key, I've seen these get mixed with 831 padlocks before.

I'd have to see your keys in order to see how beat up, cracked, bent they are in order to estimate an accurate street value for the padlock, but having the 3 keys already makes it worth more than $500. There are some of these floating around in the collector circles, so it's certainly not one of a kind, but it is not as plentiful on ebay as an old 831 or even a newer 833 padlock. If the keys were original, I'd look past $500, but if they are not, then it will probably top out around that price. $350-$500. Maybe $500 to $700 if the keys you have are pristine and didnt have the XXX's on them. This is all based on my personal experience and opinion, so your mileage may vary.

I got it because of two things i greatly enjoy, locks... and batman. So my dad found me a "bat-lock". Its a chinese thing. Suposed to be an antique. fun little thing.
