You guys may have thought about this already but I have tryed this and it work pretty good, seems strong enough.

Great idea. They might be a little thick but that can be ground down. They probably are great spring steel.

Problem is finding them around here everything seems to be made out of plastic or cost more then a batch of spring steel would.

lawn rakes come in expensive and cheap, the cheap are more useful for pickmaking as the tines are not as thick.
The steel varies but all of it can be hard and tempered, the hardened parts can be very difficult to work except with a grinder.

picked one up at Walmart for 6 bucks! My wife asked me why we needed another rake. She looked at me pretty cross eyed when I said I just needed the metal. :mrgreen:

Is there a way to test the metal rake to see if it is spring steel or not? I bought a rake years ago to do this exact thing but the metal turned out to be soft aluminum or something that bends too easily.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

grab a tine and bend it, in your hand, if it springs back, its spring steel, if it dosent, unbend it and leave it there.
