Locksmith License?

Postby taz0x » 22 Aug 2010 17:14

hi i'm new here, nice to meet you all

so i have a question about licenses, now i am not a locksmith, but i plan to take some courses about locks and its schematics and all (i mean, it's kind of fun once you get into it). now here is my concern:

i live in BC, Canada, and even though i want to learn more about locks, i definitely DO NOT WANT TO WORK IN THAT FIELD MY WHOLE LIFE (maybe perhaps part of my life). and I know there's a bunch of locksmith courses in my area, but my question is: say if i do get a license, do i need to be WORKING as a locksmith to keep that license? I mean i am sure there is some kind of renewal fee, but i'm just wondering if you actually have to work in that field to keep it.

thank you

I'm from the US but a quick google search and I found this...http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/securityindustry/shareddocs/guide-securityworker.pdf

Also, having skimmed through that document they offer licenses for 1-3 years and you must work your first 90 days under another locksmith and then there is a renewal fee that you must pay whenever your license expires. Takes at least 30 days for your application to be processed. And, that's about it in a nut-shell. They have links to all the forms and what not.

isn't that a SECURITY LICENSE guide? not a locksmith license...?

What about in the US?
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Wow, seriously, someone just offered you EXACTLY what you need to read- and all you do is simply read the weblink name and don't even look through the document? (or read the first few lines of the document)

Here, since you seem to have the need to be spoon fed- read below, which is a direct quote from that "security" license guide.

LICENCE TYPES

ARMOURED CAR GUARD

BODY ARMOUR SALES

CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION INSTALLER

ELECTRONIC LOCKING DEVICE INSTALLER

LOCKSMITH

LOCKSMITH under supervision

PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

SECURITY ALARM INSTALLER

... Maybe next time try reading through a link when someone is helpful- or they may not next time. Also pulling your .... out of your ... ... would be of benefit as well. Sorry its a bit past my bedtime- but posts like yours really irk me when its clear a user does not take the time to simply read what was provided.

Oh and to simply (sorta) answer your question indirectly- yes, you do need to be licensed in BC, even to own lockpick tools. Yes, I know people in the hobby in BC without a license, and I also know of a few who have been charged for possession of restricted tools since they were not licensed. For your actual question to be answered, I will yet again refer you to review that link, as all the information you seek is contained within it.
