Is there such a lock design

Postby ckc123 » 25 Feb 2011 10:10

Anyone know of an design of lock that has a "freely" rotating inner core, and it only "engages" the "outer" core when all "pins" are at the right height?

Was thinking of a type of lock design that has a freely rotating cylinder (so no pressure can be put on a "shear line" ) and it only engages (by some "mechanism" in the outter core that you can't contact directly)..

any thoughts??

It's probably not entirely what you're thinking of, but combination locks fit that description pretty well... and dial-based combination mechanisms are available in key-based designs (e.g., LaGard 2200).

Many disc-detainer locks come pretty close to what you describe, but there's usually at least one tensioning disc, located somewhere in a fixed position.

Some Simplex -car locks have a freely spinning keyway.
I would like to play with one, if anyone has an extra one -drop me a PM!
