I love sarcasm - and I think it can be done on the net in the following cercumstances:
1. there is a good relationship between the sarcasmer and sarcasmee
2. there is a healthy dose of emoticons
3. The sarcasm is a hyperbole (e.g. "well, today I picked an abloy with my bic pen - all hail the bic pen!")
4. The sarcasmee asked an obvious question (e.g. "how do I pick locks")
5. the sarcasmee asked a questsion without providing extra details
(e.g. "I'm having trouble with xyz help?")
all of the above must attempt to not offend the sarcasmee but rather teach
or train because this is a learning forum.
A newbie who asks a question with a well known answer and is responded
to quickly with the correct answer may ask another well known question
later without searching because hey... they got the answer last time
by asking.....
if the newbie is subjected to some well intended sarcasm, they may
become offended and scream obsenities, (in which case they will be
labled a "noob") or they can learn and will be more carefull to search
or phrase their question better.
this page:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
provides an excelent guide on how to ask smart questions online.
an example of a poorly phrased question is the one that leightonB asked
leightonB wrote:i have a master lock that ive been having trouble with.
it has a #3 on the bottom. could anyone give me some help or a hint or
anything
what would have been better would be to first, search on Master #3. then
identify and describe the symptoms that are causing the "trouble", the
method attempted and searching done to date:
e.g.
"I'm trying to pick my first lock - it's a Master#3 - Whenever I
release the tension I hear 4 "clicks" like the pins are un-binding, but I can
never pick it. I've tried a half diamond, hook and a snake rake but none
work - I've read the MIT guide and searching this site and figured that this
lock has no security pins.... what could I be doing wrong"
there - it's still a newbie question that could have been answered by
lurking on this site for a few more days, but at least it demonstrates that
the person asking the question cares enough to search and attempt
to find the answer themselves first.
