well i cant say i found that terrbly funny... but i did think romstar's first sarcastic post damm halious and i think people should learn to lay off at least a little... and if you compare how good and helpfull romstar's posts are im sure youll reize that he/she (well i dont know and i would hate to get it wrong) has done so much more good then bad.

and on top of that it sounds like they have had a hard time lately and as most people would be... well more emotional than normal(unless infact he/she is really a robot with no emotion that he spent the last post trying to cover up)

all im trying to say is Lay Off
If it doesn't seem to make sence, take a minuite to look at who said it... do you still want to know?

Okay, it just occured to me that perhaps I didn't leave some information lying around.

I'm male (last I looked that is), 31 years of age (that's going to mess more than a few people up) and I am quite the emotional guy.

Not one of those "in touch with his femine side" type emotional, but the normal type.

I've been called a robot before, but not because of lack of feeling, but because only my family ever sees me sleep. Everyone else seems to think that I don't sleep. I gave up that foolishness a lot of years ago. These days I do the DaVinci thing, and sleep about 20 minutes every four hours. More or less depending on how the day and night go. Sometimes you just have to work when the phone rings.

To be perfectly blunt, sarcasm is my normal mode but I tend to only be that way with my family and friends who understand it. On the internet, it just creates problems as there is no way to tell by the sound of a voice if someone is being sarcastic.

Honest to god, I do enjoy helping people, but you can only be asked the same thing so many times before the crap-o-meter starts to go off. Fifteen times in a row was a bit too much that day.

At any rate, I think thats enough of this. Sooner or later (most likely sooner) I am going to jam my foot in my mouth again. Maybe next time it will be funny as well.

Here's to you all,
Romstar

your right... sarcasim is horrible over the internet cause people think your serious(and that just dont work) and id just like to say that i wasnt calling you a robot, i was only saying it to prove a point (witch if i had to pull my pants down and dance on a table to do so, i most proberly would)

and about the gender thing... well iv got it wrong before and it wasnt pritty (manly because it was not over the net but i was standing right in front of them...bad)

Naw, I didn't really think you were calling me a robot. It was just funny, because I have been called that before. Brought up some funny memories.

I know all about sarcasm on the internet. I'm still getting bit by it as you can well see. I guess it's always going to be a problem for me. I'll just have to get used to it.

Bad call on that gender thing. I don't think I would have liked being in your shoes making a mistake like that. I shudder just thinking about it. I forget names all the time, and that is bad enough, but getting the gender wrong. Right in front of them? Oooo, bad.

Have a good one,

I love sarcasm - and I think it can be done on the net in the following cercumstances:

1. there is a good relationship between the sarcasmer and sarcasmee
2. there is a healthy dose of emoticons
3. The sarcasm is a hyperbole (e.g. "well, today I picked an abloy with my bic pen - all hail the bic pen!")
4. The sarcasmee asked an obvious question (e.g. "how do I pick locks")
5. the sarcasmee asked a questsion without providing extra details
(e.g. "I'm having trouble with xyz help?")

all of the above must attempt to not offend the sarcasmee but rather teach
or train because this is a learning forum.

A newbie who asks a question with a well known answer and is responded
to quickly with the correct answer may ask another well known question
later without searching because hey... they got the answer last time
by asking.....

if the newbie is subjected to some well intended sarcasm, they may
become offended and scream obsenities, (in which case they will be
labled a "noob") or they can learn and will be more carefull to search
or phrase their question better.

this page: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
provides an excelent guide on how to ask smart questions online.

an example of a poorly phrased question is the one that leightonB asked

leightonB wrote:i have a master lock that ive been having trouble with.
it has a #3 on the bottom. could anyone give me some help or a hint or
anything

what would have been better would be to first, search on Master #3. then
identify and describe the symptoms that are causing the "trouble", the
method attempted and searching done to date:

e.g.
"I'm trying to pick my first lock - it's a Master#3 - Whenever I
release the tension I hear 4 "clicks" like the pins are un-binding, but I can
never pick it. I've tried a half diamond, hook and a snake rake but none
work - I've read the MIT guide and searching this site and figured that this
lock has no security pins.... what could I be doing wrong"

there - it's still a newbie question that could have been answered by
lurking on this site for a few more days, but at least it demonstrates that
the person asking the question cares enough to search and attempt
to find the answer themselves first.

Oh my god!

Next up:

Miss Manners, and a discussion on when you should, and shouldn't talk about lock picking.

Later in the hour, we'll have Barny Alpick and a brief message on the proper care of your locks.

Be sure to stay tuned. We'll be right back after these brief messages.

If you are talking about Whitehat, he deserves everything I can dish out at him.

As for the gender issue, I shudder to think about that one.

There's a topic in the General Chatter forum titled "5000". Allegedly there are 5k persons registered with LP101 and that's great- all 5k do not post topics but whatever...

THIS topic makes me think a lot of us regular posters have multiple accounts and multiple blocks of spare time to chum the waters with topics to bite on.

I say all this because my master #3 could be rapped open with a tuning fork. Not bragging but there it is.

i find that the stupid little f--cks (locks that is) don't like me.
everytime i put a pick and tensioner in, they basically spit them back out. which is funny seing as when i opened them and took out the cylinder i could pick them in seconds :D

About the gender issue, be aware that this can even be more complicated. Some people prefer the use of gender neutral pronouns. Say what? Pronouns that are not he/she his/her. English doesn't yet have "official" GNP's, so people, and groups of people have coined their own. So some people strongly prefer one set, others another. THe problem is further compounded in that it can be hard to remember to use GNP's, so sometimes you end up with a he/she- which will always offend.
