American Military lock?

Postby tjfrazr » 2 Nov 2011 10:33

I have got a American Lock that is a pain to pick but once I get it picked how do I get the core out of it. The story behind this lock is a buddy of mine brought it to me and the lock use to be him dads, but he didn't have a key for it. It seems like it has a removable core but I can't figure how it comes out or what you have to do to get it out. Please help.

If you're talking about the American lock 5200, open the shackle, in the now free hole there's a X screw. undo that screw and the core will come out.

I'm sure there are some pictures around the site, try a little search...

Cheers :)

I've never seen a lock like that, it looks very old. Maybe some member from the other side of the pond can help you now that you've posted some pictures...

Good luck :)

I do not believe that you can take those apart without destroying them. They are crimped on the bottom. no screws to take out.

Bah cant edit :(

I know that they should still be making them, atleast up until a few years ago. I have one new in the box. Mine came with only 1 key.

This lock was never intended to be taken apart. On the bottom of the lock, the brass is crimped over the spring-top-pin part of the cylinder. This crimping can be knocked loose by steadily tapping the cylinder out with a shackle width punch through the shackle hole. You can also try tapping the shackle inward and it might knock the cylinder out. If you can get it out without deforming the back of the cylinder, it can be placed back into the lock easily and the bottom peened over again. With the cylinder out rekeying is easy.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
