Idea:Micrometer-based single pin picking

Postby Clydeniceshoes » 10 Jul 2012 20:22

Hello, this is my first post, though I've been interested in locks for awhile.
Looking for feedback on this idea:
A pick is held steady in a lock as if with a vise.
It can be moved inward and outward and rotated up and down, as if on a lever(using dials for precise movement)
These movements are measured in micrometers to receive information about the pins.
The rotation of the cylinder is also measured to register the setting of pins(like with a spirit level)
I'm thinking there's a locksmithing tool like this, since locksmiths have calipers and stuff.

Welcome to the site and thanks for making your first post a good one. There are tons of information archived here in previous topics and plenty of very talented pickers that love to share their knowledge and passion of picking locks.

To answer your question...

Uh, no.

There have been things invented over the years that are kinda, almost similar but not really.

There are tools made for wafer locks that are something like that, but not pin locks because by design it's not worth it.

Crap, now I gotta go buy calipers and stuff. :D

Yeah,
I just realized picking the lock
And disassembling it or measuring the pin heights
Would be easier for a locksmith
Is there a niche for this idea,
Say training apprentice locksmiths
Or non destructive entry for higher priced locks?

Not really in the locksmith world but hobbiest would probably really enjoy it.

To complete this thread
I read about decoder picks and high tech torsion tools
They function as I have typed above
Glad I learned something about locksmithing
Also am bringing attention to the YouTube videos
