Jeweller and Metalsmith, Willing to advise...

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Jeweller and Metalsmith, Willing to advise...

Postby Smithboy » 2 Jan 2013 16:53

Hi there,
I'm a jeweller and silversmith from Ireland and I've been picking few fairly basic types of lock on and off over the past few years. I've got experience in working with a wide range of metals and may be able to offer advice/help with anyone working on making their own picks, especially if there are any complicated/very small scale jobs that anyone is struggling with. I can help as well with silver soldering and some cold joining techniques, and offer advice on where to purchase good metalworking tools and equipment.

Also, I've been thinking for a while that it might be worth attempting to make a decent curtain pick (and save £100) or even some other sort of mechanical picking tool, but I'm not entirely sure of the mechanics behind such tools. However, if anyone trying to make something specific and has photographs or a design done out but isn't sure how to get beyond that, I may be able to help.

First proper post by the way :) I'm liking being here. Also liking the sensibility and consideration shown when someone asks how to pick a random lock of which they have only a blurry photo and no picking experience :D

Not sure if this fits in your expertise, but one thing I know a lot of people struggle with, is making better handles for picks. wood, acrylic, metal, etc. Glued, soldered, riveted, etc. I know I for one would be interested to hear any thoughts you have on this.

Welcome. Thanks for the offer of your knowlwdge. Search the site and you will find several examples of members showing how they made their curtain picks.

Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to see your creations.

Lock theme jewelry...Good idea. How about a pick set with gold handles and platinum rivets...for...I don't know...25 years service or something. It would please me better than a Mont Blanc pen or gold watch.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

Gold and platinum picks, those would be impressive. Send over the 15 grand and I can have them done within a week, postage at no extra cost :)

I may well have a look around and try making a curtain pick. I think I should probably work on making standard hand tools for a while first. I did a little bit of pick making a few years back, but only very little. Back then, and online guides to making were a LOT less sophisticated, and people cared a lot less about their mirror finish and comfortable handles :) I'm actually really glad about how much the designs have been refined and the standard of some of the picks people are making. Really impressive.

With handles, what specific questions do people have? I've been considering making a set with brass handles myself. Riveted would be wiser than any hot process because of the risk of ruining the temper of the hardened steel, unless perhaps you used spot welding or possibly even laser welding, but riveting done well would probably still be superior.
