How it's made:

So I've always been of fan of factories and machining in general so I've always enjoyed the "how it's made" series of Discovery channel. I've found a few episodes which could be interesting on YT. Here they are. I hope you'll enjoy them:
:)

How padlocks are made: (Laminated master locks, I think M5XT)

Thanks for posting this, very interesting!

It´s funny that laminated padlock has a protective casing which is mimicking laminated layers...

There was also an episode where ABUS made little green lever padlocks for the German military. You cannot find this model anywhere on the Abus website so I had a German friend get a couple for me :D

I have not been able to find this episode anywhere online and it has never been replayed so I think they played the wrong episode that day.

anyone know exactly what the laminating process is? They completely skipped over that part. It is just using some sort of glue? or are they fused together?

Thanks for this great post!

I love watching "How It's Made", but because of my schedule I can't follow it as I'd like.
I've also seen once (I think it was on the same show) how vaults are made. Dude, it was awesome. And they talk about a very important thing IMO:

- Vaults aren't made to be "unbreakable". They are made to sustain an attack for a pre-determined amount of time. For example: If a professional needs 12h to crack it, it's considered secure enough, since the bank won't be "alone" for 12h. And the burglars also need to pass other security measures, as cameras, detectors, alarms, etc.
What leads to "no system in 100% secure. the time and effort you need to crack it determine if it's worth to do it or not".
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.

They are usually just stacked in the correct order then have the rivets driven through the top. The they put in the locking parts and cylinder, put on the bottom cap then finish compressing the rivets.
