Pocket Pen Pick Set... What James Bond Wished He Had.

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

While not entirely the same, I have decided to adopt this idea for my own. First of all, I apologize for the poor picture quality my ipod can muster.

Image
This is the sharpie I decided to use. It has a lot of interior space, is made of metal so it won't get flagged randomly by a metal detector, and the tip & cap still stay on to mimic that of an actual sharpie marker. BTW, to those who noticed the rubber band on the end, this wasn't on accident. This adds the makeshift "plug spinner" to the arsenal. :)

Image
This is the tool completely broken apart. The tip is actually threaded so if you decide to remove the cap and tip as one, all you do is spin it counter clockwise. If you want to demonstrate the sharpie as an actual marker, just pull the cap straight off and the tip will stay on, concealing your lock pick set inside!
I managed to fit a VERY long tension wrench, a small xacto knife handle with approx 1 1/2" cut off, and 4 picks inside. Although, I haven't even scratched the surface on the space available. I think I could honestly fit 2-3x as many picks inside this thing.

Image
Here is a pic of the cap being pulled off, mimicking the appearance of a real sharpie marker.

In order to make the cap & tip come off as one when twisted, you have to remove this piece, along with the marker sponge thing. Once this thing is removed, the cap & tip can be twisted off if you need to go right for your pick set, without the added step of removing the cap.

Image
Here is a pic of the cap and tip removed. Notice how long the tension wrench is. it sticks out, but still managed to fit in under the tip when tightened down.

Image
The tension wrench is the FIRST to go in and the LAST to come out, for everything to fit correctly.

Image
This is the actual tool I pick with. It is simply the xacto knife with approx 1 1/2" cut off the end to fit. The pick tips were donated from an old chinese knockoff set I don't use anymore.

All in all, I think this is an AWESOME setup. I have to give a lot of credit to the OP for the original idea. In my setup, the sharpie marker functions solely as a carrying/concealing case. The xacto knife is all business.
If anyone else decides to do this setup, I think there is much more room for more picks and tension wrenches.
The only complain I have is that you do still hear some rattling from the picks. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem, please let me know!

Nice product with a lot of storage room!

You get that rattling go away with one neodym magnet. My pen has one in it and it doesn´t rattle at all. A small sylinder shaped magnet, 5mm diameter and 8mm long. Strong enough to keep all picks together. And price was about 0,20€ piece, although you have to buy at least ten of each. But I use these a lot in all kinds of things so I have a collection at home to select from :)

Mini Martor cutting tool. The slim design gives good feedback, but it holds only one pick.
Please note the different lengths of the 2 slots. One can hold the pick blade completely, the shorter one is used for picking (cutting).
The clip comes from a Faber Castell retractable pencil. It contains a small wiper blade which has to be bent on site. (using the lock itself, for example). Not a very big tensioner, but it was the best I came up with.

The stainless sharpie pens are on sale right now at AC Moore for $4. I might go back for another.

Realize it was months back now but no need for a rare earth to stop rattling.... how about a cotton ball or two stuffed in there?

To the originator, OUTSTANDING! I will review this thread a bit more and piece mail what I desire. This should be a fine DIY project.

Hey emry, i like ur very instructive piece with pics & all. U want to know what u can do to stop the rattling sound of the picks inside the pen. Well i suggest u use a piece of a bike wheel inner tube. The inner tube is very thin & should help with that rattling sound. Let me know how it works out.
