Blank Smart Key Plugs

Blank Smart Key Plugs

Postby pugtech » 2 Apr 2013 1:30

I would like to disable the cylinder/plugs in a bunch of Kwikset Smart Key locks since I only use the SmartCode keypad feature, and they can apparently be defeated by a moderate amount of torque applied to the keyway. Does anyone know of a replacement cylinder/plug with no key hole? My alternative is to fill them all with JB Weld.

Thanks...Scott

Remove the tail piece?

Also, have fun when your batteries die, you are holding 200 pounds of groceries and balancing a case of coke on your foot and your kids are screaming "i gotta go to the bathroom" and you have to walk around the house to the back door and hope the batteries in the door you havent used for a year are still good.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I was just messing about with a kwickset lock last night. They have a c-clip that attatches to the back of the plug. You could take that off and it would dissable the plug from working the lock but let you still have the thumb turn in the house work. I agree with Zeke79 though. If your battery dies, you are hosed! BTW, I would not fill them with JB weld. Astectly it would look pretty "redneck" (unless you are into that  ) and if you ever change your mind good luck getting the stuff out! Not gonna happen.

Here is a way to disable a cylinder,
Not permanent, (not fool proof)
Image

Insert piece "A" - that will prevent a key from entering the keyway.
Insert "B" to remove "A"

A lock out key will work, but you leave that "flag" sticking out of the lock and some goof will try to pull it out with a pair of pliers.

The alternative is to make the thing sit flat with the plug face, then machine in a "pin" like a small finger in the top part, and a receiver "hole" in the bottom. How it works -- |-^----------- That is the bottom of the top part, the other side gets the reverse of that. Slim down the top so it slides in and over into the receiver hole. It may take some doing to get it right, but you can fill a slow afternoon with this fun.

To remove the lower part, slide in the top part, and carefully raise up and get the "pin" to slide into the receiver hole, then push down a bit and pull out. We make these for landlords who have had problems with the old tenants trying to pull the lock out key out. This fixed the problem.

The standard lockout slug shown will not defend against an attack on this particular cylinder.
