Ok. Let imagine than we can make special flexible tool for that lock. That tool can operate with levers. But in the usual lock, when we manipulate,we push up the lever with tool and spring of the lever push down the lever. In that lock lever has not lever spring. So, our special tool can push up (rise) the lever only.

In theory we can make the pick that can "stick" to the lever. And that tool can push up an push down the lever.

Why couldn't you just use your wire to turn the lever back down if it is lifted too high?

Protective "curtain", "tube"

So, you can see that key bittin engages with lever thru small window only. The levers enter to window. Wire, key or pick can push up the lever only. At that construction(design) wire can not catch the lever to back down it. Also wire can not push on the lever to back down the lever because protective "tube" isolates inside space of lock from ouside enters.

I wonder if a specially made self-impressioning tool such as one of those 'magic keys' would work on this lever lock? Or what about regular, bare metal impressioning with a file, how resistant would this lock be to that technique?
If you do not manipulate the lock, then the lock will manipulate you

If you are talking about taking a plastericine impression reading it wont work for this lock. The portion of the levers that contacts the key are symettrical.

The pin and cam seems like it would solve any issue with picking this lock. Insert a pin, then engage stump and test with cam for the gate.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Exactly what I first had in mind. You could also try using the type of curtain picks we use in the UK too.

What I don't get is how the levers stay in position after the key has moved off to turn the gears. The other thing is that the stump and gates have anti-pick notches on there and so if it were impossible to tension then why would you need them?

ARF is right, the Russian lock market makes some wonderful things.

pin&cam does not work with that lock.

False notches made for add security. I think in that construction it has no sense.
