Exactly what I first had in mind. You could also try using the type of curtain picks we use in the UK too.
What I don't get is how the levers stay in position after the key has moved off to turn the gears. The other thing is that the stump and gates have anti-pick notches on there and so if it were impossible to tension then why would you need them?
