How to use short pick in a constricted keyway?

Postby Hawaiihunter » 24 Mar 2014 23:52

I am wondering how you guys use a short pick in a constricted keyway. I tend to turn it diagonally and push it in and straighten it out at the end of the keyway. I am using a Schlage C Keyway by the way.

I will usually use a short hook and ride the warding on the left side with the pick angled to the right towards the pins. It's easier for me to keep the pick angled and use the warding to lever off of. Also I'm a fan of top of the key way tension.

What kind of Top Of Keyway Tensioner do you have? I was looking for a good, cheap one.

My go to top of the key way tensioners are the Peterson Prybars.

I tried your method, but it seems kind of weird because it feels like I am scraping the side of the lock by the ward. It's kind of like you're pushing the side of the pin to push it up?

It takes some getting used to compared to having the pick perfectly straight. Don't push the side of the pin, you still want to push the pin from the tip but it will be on an angle.

How do you get good feedback when you're riding the warding and levering?

There's a lot of factors that go into it. Some of the feedback you receive has to do with the picks you are using. Also I practiced for a while on less restrictive key ways before I tried the Schlage C. The more practice you have before hand the better. I got used to normal 5 or 6 pin locks some with spools before hand. My first Schlage C was a practice lock from MR. Wizard. It helped tremendously to be able to start with less pin stacks and get used to the restricted key way little by little. I can tell you that this method does work. I just tried it again successfully with 6 pins; 3 spools, 2 serrated, and 1 standard pin. I used top of the key way tension, a normal short hook, and a few picks from the Sparrows Monstrum set. Not saying it cant be done without these things, just letting you know what I used.

Like Divinorium said, you just have to ride the wards. If you have a thin lock pick like a Slimline, you can get away with it easily.
