What type of lock more safer from lockpicks ?

Postby Carllos Allex » 25 Nov 2013 10:33

Is there some kind of lock (mechanical and / or electronic) that is impossible to open without breaking it ?

Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum,

What are you trying to protect? A safe? a home, a business, a cabinet, a door?

Thanks,

Welcome Carllos.

To answer your question, no. There is no lock in the world that is impossible to open without destruction. However, there are many that are difficult or improbable to open.

Like Squelch said, it is important to know what you are attempting to secure. I would also add a few more questions that can help us guide you in the proper direction.

1) What is your perceived threat level? Are you trying to stop a burglar from breaking into your house or a trained operator from stealing a nuclear weapon?
2) Where are you located? It helps us decide what type of lock would be appropriate for you. Common locks in the USA are not the same as common locks in the UK.
3) What is your budget for a lock? The price for a good mechanical lock for a front door is quite different from a high security lock on a sensitive facility.

Let us know and we will do our best to point you in the right direction!

Without using physical force such as drilling locks that are resistant to being picked will usually have two different locking actions within the lock itself. The most common are locks that use a locking side bar. The two that spring to mind are Medeco and ASSA and I'm sure that there are many more. Each lock has a side bar and the pin shear line.

What you have to do with these locks is to simultaneously raise all six pins to the shear line and also at the very same moment shift the pin, all six, to allow the side bar fall into the plug. Now given all these properties have to happen at the same time any locksmith that I know will break out the drill to drill the two drill points and then replace the lock once he/she has gained entry. They will not waste their time trying to pick it.

Short answer: there is one: Evva MCS.
There is now known non-destructive opening methods. At least now known for the public, for the locksmiths, and not even for the enthusiastic lock lovers like myself. There are rumours(!) of the STASI opening them, but they (allegedly) "cheated" with tryout keys and don't forget had the full resources and backing of a nation-state, so... Anyhow unless you are CIA and stuff there is no opening an EVVA MCS without destruction. And even if you are the CIA it's an open question, I'd even risk saying dubious.

It's not just resistant to picking as it stands now it's unpickable.
To infinity... and beyond!
