Tear Gas inside fire vault door

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Tear Gas inside fire vault door

I was called to a site to change the combos on a Diebold fire door and I found a nasty surprise inside. There were 4 viles of tear gas (God only knows how old it was) attached to the door, just behind the lock. If I had "jammed" the change key in, it would not have been pretty. I am attaching some pix to help you to identify this incase you run into it.

OK, was doing some reading as those things are really interesting and I don't know if this could be true or not. But please be aware.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1346&dat=19870418&id=u7cwAAAAIBAJ&sjid=qfsDAAAAIBAJ&pg=1934,1157834

The article states that from age and exposure, the contents of the old teargas vials can become explosive. I found it on some other places on the internet too. It is the internet, but please be careful.

Here is another type, from a display case of a safe shop haunted by me whenever there is time. My friend removed that years ago.

Gordon,

Did you mean to include a picture or link? It doesn't appear to have been included...

That is just so amazingly cool. I am glad you didn't break them, that would have been a really bad day at work...

Be careful, those old gas vials are pretty rare and can go for quite a bit to collectors.

The owner is talking about having me remove it perminently. I have now removed and replaced it 3 times. If I do get to perminently remove them, I WILL NOT keep them around. I would be interested in offers.

Yes, and crying would have been the best thing that could have happened. There also could have been a big BANG.

I've removed a few of these over the years. I contacted my local fire dept to see how they should be disposed of and they told me toss them in the dumpster.
