Locksmith License in CA

Postby asgardschosen » 15 Oct 2014 21:58

Anyone have information on how difficult it is to get a locksmithing license in California? Does it ever need to be renewed? Does it involve anything besides sending in your fingerprints and some money? I've read over the "Fact Sheet" from the State of California website, but all it lists is the background check, fingerprints, and cost. It doesn't say anything about testing, etc..

The short answer is that there is no test or other demonstration of skill required. If you set up as a Locksmith Company (LCO), you'll have to set up a DBA or corporation, and they will want to see documentation that proves you have (Stamped applications, etc).

If you become licensed as a Locksmith Employee, I believe that an LCO will need to file on your behalf. Long story short, California really doesn't care about what you know, they just want a clean background, and they want to know where to find you.

.... And yes, you have to renew every two years.

Thanks for the fast reply! Working on improving my skills as I go along and want to get the ball rolling on the license. Picking is mostly a hobby for me atm, but I can always use some more income haha.
