Help changing my front door lock

Postby dpestish » 28 Oct 2014 6:24

Hi

I'd like to change my front door PVC lock but am having trouble getting a single screw out

I've changed the lock to my old house before, without a problem. It was the same type lock

I've tried a power drill to get it out, screwdrivers, pliers and one of those long-handled twisty screwdrivers

What else can I try?

I'm just trying to save £60-70

Please help
Cheers

My favorite tool for this is an automatic center punch, but you can also use a center punch and a small hammer. To begin tap the punch straight onto the screw, in the outer section, on the top. Try to avoid messing up the place the screwdriver goes & just punch a dimple. Now place the punch into the dimple you made and angle the punch in the direction you want the screw to go, lefty loosey usually, and hit the punch. Watch the screw while you hit it with the punch, as soon as you see it begin to unscrew I usually put aside the punch and use the screwdriver to get it the rest of the way out. After a couple of whacks, make another dimple right across from the first one and again angle the punch so you will be unscrewing the screw & give another whack or two.

Why can't you get the screw out?

Will it not turn? Possibly rusted in place or cross threaded. Might have to drill the head off.

Turns but will not come out? Possibly stripped threads or broken weld on the nut it screws in to.

Pics help because we can not see it from here.
