Deadbolt questions

Postby somenewguy » 31 Oct 2014 23:48

Is there a generic name for the type of deadbolt where, at the end of the bolt's travel, two ball bearings come out of the sides of the bolt to grab the strike?

Who makes these? So far I have found a Mul-T-Lock model and an Abloy model.

Also, some deadbolts have a rod through them such that if you tried to hacksaw through the bolt, you'd eventually hit the rod, which would just roll as you tried to saw it. Is it impossible to have both features in one deadbolt (does the mechanism that deploys the ball bearings take up the space where this rod would go)?

I assume fitting these is somewhat tricky? Because the bolt and strike must be a snug fit and well aligned, if a door/jamb shrinks or expands in extreme weather, it could cause problems.

It's an "expanding bolt" deadbolt latch. Originally a Mul-T-Lock product but as they've been purchased by ASSA Abloy it's now also available through Abloy, and possibly some other companies under that umbrella.

I like them!

Thanks MBI!

Is that it? I thought for sure it was a generic feature available from other suppliers. The two links I originally found were the Abloy one at Security Snobs and a Mul-T-Lock one (my first search turned up parts:
http://www.mul-t-lock-online.com/store/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=25 , I later found a complete deadbolt shown here:
here: http://www.mul-t-lockusa.com/res/English_Product_files/Locks/L12.pdf )

After searching on the term "Expanding deadbolt" the only additional one I found was a mortise type: http://www.adamsrite.com/en/site/adamsritecom/Adamsrite-Products/?groupId=1158381&productId=1168183

I guess the rest of the market goes to those surface mount vertical deadbolts (Segal type)?

I found one interesting lock, does anyone actually make this (see Figure 25-7(d):

Personally I don't think they add much in the way of security. I thought Medeco had one years ago too, but my memory isn't that good sometimes.

Well, like anything I guess it depends on the strength of the overall installation. I know Medeco made a fairly well reviewed vertical interlocking deadbolt, but I have not yet seen one from them where the bolt latches into the strike like the Mul-T-Lock

Not only that but the few I have seen had a 3 1/2" backset, not much use for that in the states

All Abloy tubular deadbolts available here about 10 years ago or so came that way.
Then after about a 5 year model run, the newer ones no longer had the balls.
Now they are no longer available.
Even the latches from them we have in a drawer would not fit hewer models as everything has changed.

All in the ASSA/ABLOY Group at the time had them too.

I think you may be able to get an ASSA, Multilock or Medeco with balls still, I just don't deal with them as much.

I just noticed the new Assa grade 1 deadbolts use this latch, they are super-expensive

I personally just love ASSA 6000 series deadbolt...literally designed to withstand any kind of physical attack....
