eBay Safe Cutaways

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

My safe lock arrived today! I'll be looking for a mounting plate between 1/8th and 1/4 of an inch thick.

Once i've got it mounted it I'll start a thread with some cutaway pics.

Big thanks to everyone who gave me advice.

Alright gents, finally got the thing mounted! By the way, I got this mount from mbausa.com for around $18 (for the version with the screws included). I thought it was made out of metal, but it turns out the body is made completely from plastic, slightly disappointing as it seems a little unstable to me - in terms of the weight distribution. Either way, pics as promised.

In case anyone else is going to mount one let me give you this little piece of advice (as it took me a while to figure it out). When mounting it, you'll need to put the spline key into the spindle, and you'll have 4 possible places to put it named RH, LH, VU, and VD.

    RH = "Right Hand"
    LH = "Left Hand"
    VU = V (?) "Up"
    VD = Venerea....wait I mean "Down"

Basically if the bolt is to the RIGHT of the spindle/cam then you put it on RH. My problem was I wasn't sure from which perspective this was. So it is from the BACK of the lock. Basically from the point of view of the installer (on the back of the safe door) NOT from the point of view of the safe front.

When I get my see through plastic bit from McMaster Carr I'll make a thread with step by step cutaway making. I use the term "cut-away" loosely, as I don't think there'll be much to actually cut!

Glad you got a nice display mount for your lock. I'm used to the black ones, but the blue one looks pretty good as well.

Here's an awesome video explaining all those Vertical Up and Down spline keys ;-)

Enjoy!

huh, I didn't get any of those threaded barrels with my lock setup kit, are they necessary to properly install the lock? Mine seems to be okay, though I haven't changed out the combination yet (im still fiddling with its basic functions).

That's an alignment tool that you can make or maybe purchase, it normally doesn't come with a new safe lock.

Have fun with the lock!

Is it necessary to properly install the lock? What exactly does it align?

Oh I will! I WILL!!! BWAHAHA.

Also I got my see-through acrylic sheet today. All I need is my dremel knock-off to come in the mail to actually make it a cutaway. :D

By the way McMaster-Carr was super cool. I ordered a piece of Polypropylene originally, when it came in the mail I noticed it wasn't see-through. The mistake had been completely mine, I had assumed that what I was getting was see-through. I called them up and said hey, I by mistake ordered the wrong thing, can you tell me what I should order to get something machinable and see-through. The guy was very nice, gave me options and then at the end he told me that he would just credit my purchase with the cost of the original thing and that I didn't even need to send it back in! I hadn't even asked about any return or refund or anything like that. Super cool company to do that even without my asking. And of course just a couple days later the correct thing has just arrived.

*EDIT*

In case anyone else is interested in what material to get, I haven't installed it yet, but I ordered the "Optically Clear Cast Acrylic Sheet" 1/16th thick and 1' by 2' for about $9.
