Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

will never buy from BumpMyLock again!

I ordered stuff from them 3 months ago and when I received my order on Mar 5th I noticed that one of the bump keys were missing. I emailed them and let them know. a few days later I got a message that said that they put a note in with my order telling me that the key would be shipped when available. Fast forward 2 months and I email them again saying I have not heard from them and have not received the key. I got a reply of... "we have been moving and catching up on backordered items...your key is set to ship this week " That was on the 5th or 6th of this month..

So I email them back because I was extremely PO'ed that I was lied to about it shipping out that week and not getting anything in the mail or even an email saying sorry but we will be shipping soon. I called them on it and got a nasty sounding voicemail about them giving me back my 1.92 for the price of the key and a nasty note telling me that they were refunding because I called them lairs.

When I say I will do something by a certain time I will do it or I put myself out there to be called a lair and I hold others to the same standard (especially a business)

I will never do business with people like this again and I wanted to let any and all who are thinking of ordering from them to be carefull doing business with people like them!

i dont really understand why people bother to order bump keys online. if you really want to use bump keys, you have to constantly be making new ones because they wear out fast. you might as well invest in an actual machine that will code cut them for you because the cost of constantly ordering keys really adds up. i personally find that after bumping a couple locks, a key is pretty much done because the effectiveness of it drops significantly.

he's a hobbyist, he's not bumping 20 customer doors like a locksmith might every day or week.. plus, we all want lots of picks and pick sets and other neeto stuff like a set of 25 bump keys to be able to bump all the common key ways out there, in case the need ever comes up, so people set up online shops to fill the demand. some shops are run by night, some are side jobs for people who have other jobs and just wanted to jump on a band wagon that was hot for a year or two. some shouldnt be in business like we are finding out.

I bought a set once.. never once used them, still have them in a baggie for a rainy day.. it was just cool to own them. and I suck at bumping, it actually does seem to take practice and good timing. a proper bump hammer or piece of wood or a nice plastic screwdriver handle helps too! =)

Maybe that's why mine don't work very well, because my peaks aren't well defined?
Back on topic, that's too bad. Maybe there should be a good/bad business list. I think I've seen something like that before on here.

wait... I didn't think locksmiths usually bumped locks. @ victorylocksmith Do you do it as part of your business?

Guilty!!! when I started picking locks about 3 months ago I got sucked into the bump key allure and ordered the 39 key set... I used the M1 maybe 3 times, got the locks open and got bored with bumping so I went back to SPPing. Its not that I needed the Schlage Everest 125 key because I probably would never bump a lock...As Squelchtone said, I'm a hobby picker.

When I move to Oregon in 4 months I will start to hang out with my nephew who got me into picking to take my mind off pain and channel it towards something constructive. He is a locksmith and wants me to go with him when my body permits it so maybe I can pick some locks in the field with him :D I think that would be fun!

I really wish I didnt spend my money on the Bump keys and waited to purchase a cheap key copy machine.... I impression locks for the local locksmith and give him keys that are not factory cut. If I had a copy machine and some depth keys I could make factory keys for all the locks I have impressioned for him (probably in the low 100's) It could have helped sell the locks faster..

you know, a lot of old school locksmiths will frown on me for using bump keys, but i really dont care. when i need to get into a place for work and i need to get into it fast, i really dont have time to be SPP locks. as squelchtone has stated before, this is a site primarily for hobbyists so maybe they have lots of time to pick open locks. as for me, if i have to spend more than 15 minutes picking a lock, i personally consider that a failure. my service call always includes either the first rekey or first 15 minutes of labor and if i cant get it open without drilling it in that time, then the price jumps up around $20 ever 15 minutes. so taking that into consideration and how pissed people can get for being billed a crapload of money i would just rather bump the lock until it opens.

i know, i can usually open 95% of the locks out there that i have key blanks to and can code cut within at most 10 minutes with a bump key. usually it takes between literally 15 seconds and 5 minutes to get a lock open. in short, i dont have time to waste and SPP like hobbyists do at home. i need to be quick and efficient and dont have time for that. that doesnt mean that you cant be badass and SPP locks super fast but, that takes a lot of time and practice and quite frankly i havent got to that point. even so, i would much rather learn about access control products and other things than just SPP for hours and hours.

as for what squelchtone says for lock bumping and how it doesnt wear down the key that quickly, it really depends on the lock. but i can say for certain, they do wear out fast and if you actually plan on bumping locks consistently, then you need to buy a code machine. i find that on some harder locks to bump, ill trash a key on just one of those. and given some easier ones, i can make them last forever, i mean ive had my fair share of locks that i can open in just one bump. however, my point being is this, the moment that key starts to twist and become wrecked is when it loses a significant amount of effectiveness and if you are trying to bump a hard lock. it can take exponentially more time because every time you hit it, it gets even worse.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'd also file a Better Business Bureau complaint against them. They have a B+, and it looks like you're not the only one who has had problems with them.
