Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

It sounds like it has a sleeved core. If you get it shimmed, could you gut it and show the insides? If it has a sleeved core with out of round holes, picking will be almost impossible.

Here are some sketches I done long ago for the forums to explain how the assa pins work and interfere with picking. Practice goes a long way but to be honest plug material (ss or brass) along with plug wear make the most difference for me.

For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Based on how much the core turns when I hit false set and the fact that it feels seized up to the point that it stays there with zero tension. I believe this is what I am dealing with.

At times I felt like I am one pin away from open but rotating the core back to set it would undo everything. I've seen a few people pick these in the "what did you pick today". I would greatly appreciate any feedback from you guys. The only thing I haven't tried is a long hook and I plan on giving that a try on the weekend.

I know that deeeep false set all to well; that's infuriating. For me, once it went into that false set, I switched to a slim short hook, backed way off the tension, and used the tip of my pick to actually rotate the plug back as needed (was picking CW, so I used the pick to rotate back CCW), then resumed working the pinstacks. Don't do this with your favorite pick, for obvious reasons. It worked for me, on the one 600 I've played around with. Your mileage may vary; good luck!

Thank you Robotnik. No cigar yet, but I'm working on it.

The 3 times I have picked that cylinder, I got to the deep set. Then nothing. I had to ease up on the tension. Lost a set or maybe 2 but set another one. I find that the easy to reach deep set is NOT the first pins that need to be set first. Took me over an hour my first time. Had to tie off the pry bar with a rubber band to hold the set and rest my hands. The fastest time I picked it was just over half an hour. It is even harder using the new ASSA double end spools. Could psychological because you would think the old christmas tree spools would catch the counter milling in the plug better.

Made a bump key for the ASSA 600 tonight. Should work with any using the UL keyway profile. Danged thing worked too!!! Ground off the shoulder and added an o-ring and a rubber grommet so I could machine gun it. Shocked me when it worked!

Nice job jimu57!

Here's a TOOOL paper about bumping higher quality locks, I think you'll enjoy it: https://toool.nl/images/7/75/Bumping.pdf

Enjoyed reading that paper myself, Squelchtone. :)

Think I may contact Barry and see if he already has blanks for the three ASSA Twin sidebars for which I have blanks.

Me too. Actually, it was the momentum which led me to replace MTL Interactive in my front door 10 years ago :D
