Abloy PL 321: not "enough" lock for storage unit?

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Abloy PL 321: not "enough" lock for storage unit?

Postby General_Tso » 14 Oct 2015 9:08

All:

I have an indoor storage unit that needs a padlock. My plan was to buy the 321 to be pick resistant and show proof of a break in, because the door and latch seem to be the weak point in terms of brute forcing rather than any lock. Should I use a more substantial lock like the PL 330 or should I be looking in a different direction?

Thanks!

Personally, I find most storage unit latches to be fairly weak, along with the doors themselves.
Using an expensive, high security lock is simply advertising the fact that 'treasure is inside'.
I prefer to use an abus round padlock, which is likely as strong as the latch it is locked onto.

The PL321 is what I use on my gun cases. It is tiny and not worth $35 if someone is just going to smash it off with a hammer. In my opinion is more suited for key control, not to prevent a physical attack. The PL330 on the other hand may not fit into the holes on the latch at your storage unit.

I'd go with the Abus Discus 24/70 like bill suggested. hard to pick for an average bad guy and a pain in the ass to cut off unless you're a locksmith and know what to do.

Thanks for the input, folks. I see a few variants of the Abus Discus 24/70. Is this the one to get?

Thanks again!

I'm having a hard time finding these locally. You guys have any luck in US big box stores? I'm only finding weather-resistant model on Amazon.

Worth confirming with the seller that this is without dust shutter and is the correct model (pic is of a 24/60), but this may be what you're looking for.

The Amazon link was a bust. (It was the one with the keyway cover.)

I have found one local dealer who can order me a 24/70, but they are all keyed alike. Is this a problem? (I only need two.) If this is a problem, does anyone have any alternatives to the 24/70?

As in all teh locks he has are keyed alike or just the 2 you get are keyed alike?
If only the 2 you get are keyed alike and are different from the other locks you should be safe, it's not a disadvantege. In fact it's an advantage, since you only need to carry 1 key for both padlocks.

If all the locks he has arekeyed alike (such as he has 100 of the same padlock keyed the same as leftover from some big order) skip the lock. Chances are almsot all the locks of that kind in your vicinity will be keyed the same. (Especialyl since it's a rare lock around you.)

Abloy isn't bad. In fact it's very good :D If you don't want it to sit there in all it's shiny beauty you can make it a bit beaten and muck it up with oily dirt or pfelcks of paint making it look old and shabby.

and one more thing to consider if you are geting an abloy 24 RK (focus on RK as in rekeyable) you can have it rekeyed without much hassle.

Do like the PL362, but the S&G 931 is a monster! Still want to get an Anchor Lås 590-6 shrouded padlock for my collection. That would be a fairly tough lock, too.

Maybe so, but pretty sure that #18 is discontinued. Want one of those for my "Don't drop this lock on your foot" collection.
