Great install of VD99 with alarm kit

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Great install of VD99 with alarm kit

Postby cledry » 3 Dec 2015 6:39

Got a call to go out to a mall and determine what was happening with a Von Duprin 99 that had an alarm kit that wasn't sounding. 2 other technicians had already worked on the bar before I arrived from other companies and the alarm kit had been replaced 2 times in the past 6 months.

I arrive and it is dead as stated. Pull the end cap and immediately see that the external power supply is being fed into the wrong terminals on the board. Check the 9 volt battery and it is fresh, so the board is toast. Next I check for 24 VDC at the wire coming in, nothing. Odd becuase the wire sparked when I took it off. So I switch my meter to AC and sure enough 27.2 VAC!

I assume that there was a rectifier in line and it went bad. Well it isn't at the bar end so lets find the power supply. OK find the power supply and it is a Schlage PS902. Odd that it should have AC output. So I get the big ladder, open the box and what do I find. A doorbell 24 VAC transformer! Here's the kicker, the PS902 board is in place too. I assume the board is bad and some idiot put the cheapest 24 volt transformer they could find in its place.

At this point I pull the PS902 board to bench test on the assumption it is bad. Nope, it works perfectly, put a 1 amp load on it overnight and works fine. I'll never know why it wasn't used or why the other 2 technicians didn't spot the issue.

We can only hope that since you fixed it right, they will call you first next time!

It is through a NSP so first they call the installer if it is under warranty which it was for the first calls.

And they installed it backwards too, the 120 VAC input should be on the left and the 24 VAC output should be on the right, that way the class 3 wiring will not be crossing over the 120 VAC wiring.
