remote controlled lock

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

You forgot to tell the o/p just what happens to this special electronic lock, after the batteries go dead,
which I think is the dumbest idea Ever. Why even bother hiding the battery box inside the compartment?
Every electronic lock I ever saw gives plenty of warning when the battery is getting low.
Plenty of warning if You are around to use it. My safe tells me every day that I am supposed to change the battery, however when the battery really does go dead I won't have to destroy my safe lock, just to change
batteries, unlike this crummy lock.
I just found out electronics are starting to be used in place of the old mechanical timelocks in bank vaults, FWIW.

Hey guys!
Thanks to all of you you for your help. It wasn’t easy to choose from so many great suggestions.
I decided to try two magnetic drawer baby-locks, because they are simple, uncomlicated, cheap and easy to install.

For my skillset that seemed simplest, most foolproof way. No need for electricity so no worries about batteries or possibly dangerous cabling near children. Plus I’m really uneducated with electronics so many things which are simple as a 1,2,3 to you guys are a challenge to me. Obviously dependent on how well you know your way around in that field there is surely a lot cooler solutions to similar projects. And with electronics you could definitely make it more complicated, and extend it with possibly two way identification and so on. I briefly toyed with the idea of two way identification (magnet plus remote controller) and even a fail safe secondary opening mechanism. Talking to the parents and eventually realising I’m way too lazy for that I thought that is all way too much.

I admit it’s not fancy, and there were a lot of really cool ideas tempting me. But I like the elegance of this super simple solution and that it’s hassle free to install and hopefully maintenance free.
Since there will be no valuables stored, the lack of security is not an issue. And for a child a magnetic lock is already super cool :D

So again, thank you for your enthusiastic help and support I really appreciate it and it helped me a lot!

Will see how this version holds up and if it fails I’ll keep you updated with my experience.
Sorry for the belated reply, I’m very busy since a long time now :/
I'm gonna but the lock this week sometime.

As for electronic safe locks: there are still issues with that. I wouldn't use an electric safe lock, only if the audit fucntion and time lock would be a priority (comapnies) and if the ease of use was so important (older people for one).
Many malfucntion due to low battery voltage, they sometimes have issues before they signal low battery. At least that's my experience with electric lagards for example. (But others are similar in quality as well IMO)
And they just don't last as long and have a lot more ways to break than good old keyed or combination mechanical locks. I don't think electronic locks can be expected to last 10 yrs and mechanical ones function well after many many years with some care.
That said it's true that insitutional clients overwhelmingly prefer electric ones, for their supposed ease of use and adittional fucntions (timelock, audit, programmability, multiple users, two way ID in one lock).
Lastly, in my expereince, people foolishly put electric lock on their fire resistant safe and happily forget to consider that a mechanical lock is much more resistant to heat than a palstic electric lock...

And please don't forget most can have their batteries changed from the outside of can be powered from the outside independently.
But let's not derail the thread.
My questions are answered, thank you for your help :)

Interesting project!
I would go for a magnet lock similar to thisone: http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Electromagn ... 1119037068
We use these for escape doors. They do the trick and their easy to install.

I have a few of the Kwikset deadbolts, pre smart-key that come with a remote control. You could do a one-way deadbolt install, and not drill all the
way through the door and leave the outer part of the deadbolt off--If you dared! Then it would be really keyless

Thanks bill, very kind of you! :) :)

I already solved the issue with magnetic baby locks. Admittedly not very high security, but there is no sign of the hidden compartment, no way of knowing it's magnet-based and even then you have to find the place to put the magnet to So I think it's pretty safe :)

Plus I can recommend this to anyone thinking about it, it was super easy to install, works reliably AFAIK and was cheap.

Of course if you want to store valuables my recommendation is a good safe and a good alarm (and good locks of course :P )

I was also going to recommend a magnetic setup.I've used them in all sorts of things and they work great.I used to do custom car audio and the magnetic switches worked great for activating all sorts of things like hidden valet switches to secret panels and amp racks.

Thanks for sharing and believe it or not they do offer a decent amount of security through obscurity but only if well hidden and kept a secret ;)

Reason: self promoting link to commercial locksmith website changed to amazon.com listing for the same item. I think we've been down this road before a bunch of times haven't we?

That is the magnetic lock everyone is talking about,
I used two of them to make a handy stash in my last house, under the sink in the bathroom
