Abus Rock 83/80 -- US vs. European variations?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Abus Rock 83/80 -- US vs. European variations?

Postby gumptrick » 3 Jul 2017 9:03

So, I've been looking for a padlock body that can accept a Euro Oval cylinder, aka "Scandinavian cylinder". There is a lot of information online which suggests that the Abus Rock 83/80 accepts this type of cylinder. including official documentation from Abus. Sounds good so far.

However, the ones I have I seen appear to take a "snowman" sort of cylinder instead. Bosnianbill and lockpickinglawyer both have videos showing this lock disassembled and the cylinder is clearly not the Oval.

So it seems that there may be a difference between the US marketed 83/80's and the Euro market version of the same lock? Or perhaps the design was changed at some point? Can anyone confirm?

Gumptrick, This post should answer your questions.

The search button is pretty cool! ;)

Any other questions that may not be in that thread?

Perfect, thank you!
I did search before posting but for some reason I never came across that topic.
The oval cylinder you posted there--is that the Vitess model? Or something different?

And in case anyone is curious, I have seen a few vendors offering the US version with a higher security core than the default 5-pin one. Securitysnobs offers it with Bilock or Protec2. Lockitt offers the Vitess and the 888 core. I am sure there are others.

The oval core is an Abus Pfaffenhain Y14 Deltus.

Yes, as much as people recommend the search feature on the site, it is rarely effective for finding what you are looking for.

I always recommend using Google with your question and site:lockpicking101.com in the query. That seems to find the answers more reliably.

But in the worst case, you ask a question and get someone pointing you in the right direction. If you are fine with a bit of sarcasm and condescension, always feel free to ask. :D
