Making a key for an old Yale Padlock

Postby tpark » 12 Aug 2017 11:56

I have an old Yale padlock, that was sent to me, and I wonder if anyone has official depth and space information for this lock. It appears to start at 200 with a spacing of .165 (which is standard for the Y1/999 keyways) but when I made a key, the values didn't seem to fit with any of the standard schemes. It seemed closest to the Yale large pin format. Also, they suggest using a 100 degree cutter with a 45 thou root to cut the key - does this seem right? Could it be that the pins are a bit worn, screwing up my values a bit?

My key was cut to 238,301,277,320,320 and works without issue.

Thanks for the info! The information you have fits with the information that I have from HPC and Framon. After picking the lock, I cut down a blank as a feeler, and it wouldn't pass a key cut to 244 thou, but was tight at 240. I figured the right height was around 238 based on that for pin 1. With this measurement, I figured that 225 was way too low. I found an entry for "Yale Large Pin" that used depths of
0 315
1 295
2 276
3 256
4 236
5 217
6 197
7 177
8 157
9 138

With that information, I made a key of depths 236, 295, 276, 315, 315 - the key works, but it turns as though some of the pins are slightly low.
I widened the root cut to 60 thou (I was using an 84 degree cutter, so I figured it might need a bit longer root).

I have a Framon 2. I can cut you a key. Just bought a 90 degree cutter.

Thanks for the offer - Since this was a one off, the key I have works fine. I have the 90 degree icore cutter, so that would have been closer, if I'd actually looked it up first. The Yale pin spacing/depth information you posted was extremely helpful, and I'm sure I can cut a key close to the official spec now.
