Problem!!!

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Problem!!!

hi i started lock picking for about 3 hours now, i got a keypad and i got the 3 out of the 4 pins down but my tension was a bit bad because of the thickness, whats the best to use as a tension? Flathead screwdriver?? :?:

I would suggest using a tension wrench  If you don't have your own, you can produce them out of things such as windshield wiper blades and possibly hacksaw blades. Unless your flathead screwdriver is modified, it will be difficult to work with.

Whatever tool you choose as your tension wrench, Remember to be very light on the torque applied. You don't want the pins to bind 'in' the shear line. The goal is to get them to clear it.

When I was just starting and didn't have a tension wrench I found that a little screwdriver with the head bent at a 45 degree angle worked ok for me, you jsut really need to feather it seeing as it won't bend.

When you insert the tension wrench you barely apply any tension at all. One finger resting on the end should be enough, sometimes too much. The bottom pins are all different sizes, so how far you need to push them varies from pin to pin, you can tell when they are pushed high enough because the lock will make a little clicking noise as the driver pin sets, and than as you feel the bottom pin you should be able to tell the difference between gravity making it fall back down and the spring behind the driver pin. I'm not sure what you mean by "get the pins so they drop into the shear line," but one thing I have seen people do is that they expect the bottom pins to stay up after they press them up. That is not true at all, if they stay up than they have jammed and you need to release tension and start again. You press the bottom pins which in turn press the driver pins, than the bottom pins fall back down and look normal, and the driver pins get stuck on shear line.

Exactly, when all the pins are set, you will know it.

The amount of tension needed depends of the lock, but generally u only need a light to medium tension..

Usually thats the result of using too much tension: u push the key-pin past the shearline in to the hull and because of the high tension it gets stuck in there.. >see page 15 on the MIT guide<
