looking for EDC lockpicks

Postby Deja vu » 11 Sep 2017 10:50

Im looking for a set that is light and small. Been looking at jackknifes. I have never used a set before are they any good? IF so whats a good brand? I am looking to buy a nice set since I plan to have it for a long time.

If jackknifes are not great what would you suggest?

Click the SerePick link in the banner ad above. They have some nice sets that fit in your wallet. Forget the big clumsy jack knive design.

I will second Squelchtone's opinion. Jack knife sets are bulky and in my opinion, when I have used them I can't feel hardly any feedback from the pick. If you are picking master locks, pretty much anything will do, but if you want to be able to do anymore than that, check out serepick. I have the titanium bogota set, and while they take some getting used to, I prefer them over a jack knife.

Great point about the feedback! It is one of the things a lot of new lock pickers overlook when they buy tools.

Always make sure that your pick handles are not going to absorb those small vibrations.

Has anyone tried the Sparrows mace picks? I have a set inbound, but they do look really short.

Mace picks came in, and they are tiny! They did also come with an assortment of tension tools.

I carry this set (in black) for over a year now and I love it.

Are there any issues with feedback? Do you just use it for raking?

Also, can you swap out the tools if one of the picks breaks?

One more. Is the tension wrench any good? I can't really see it with those pictures.

the feedback is not bad for a tool so small, I dont rake locks that often and have had no problems SPPing 1100's and SFIC locks with it.
picks only take a sec to replace in it, you can order replacement picks or blanks and make your own tool.
the only thing I am not overly happy with is the tension tool but it works as good as any BOK tension that comes with a pick set.

I'll have to agree with pretty much everything blue60 said about that set. I've tried every folding pick set I've been able to find over the years and that Southern Specialties set is the only one I ever found that I liked, although I prefer the aluminum handled version over the plastic.

You can get the aluminum one with "regular" picks or their euro slimline picks, and as blue60 said, they're easily replaceable and spares are available and inexpensive. I still carry a couple of my favorite tension tools as well as I like them better than the included ones.

Hello,

Personally for an EDC set i would say go with a nice thin case like the Sparrows Tuxedo Case, then select a few picks (WITHOUT HANDLES) that fit your needs in the thickness that you need for the locks you will be encountering on a daily basis. You can add some heat shrink to them for a little comfort without giving up much feedback and still keep this kit very thin where it will fit very comfortably in a pocket. To me the folding pick deal is more of a novelty, it does work sure, but the set screw can become lose and your pick starts to flop around and you lose your feedback, or you can lose the set screw all together. To me the key to your question is "EDC" and that means reliability.
