XYZ U-Haul disc lock

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

XYZ U-Haul disc lock

Postby Sinifar » 2 Jan 2018 16:33

Okay, this is also up on Clearstar. So here is the dope --

My cousin needed a padlock taken off a unit, it turned out to be a U-Haul discus type. Tried picking ... in this COLD? My hands got frost bit in about 10 minutes. not good at 70 ... So I decided to drill the thing. Got out the Dewalt, and a 3/16' bit and put a hole in it. The plug broke in half and came out! Goodie!! Now to insert a screw driver into the hole and flip it over .....

Not so fast. That took quite a few minutes of trying to turn ???||| something down inside. I got it off, and she put another on on. So ..

I brought the lock down here in the office and have been screwing around with it trying to duplicate what I did out in the cold. So far no soap.

Okay, so what is the secret? IM if you can't say in the forum. I will keep on trying to flip this thing over if i have to go out and do it again - but - really -- it should have opened when the plug came out and the guts were now open to something getting in there and turning the mechanism and the bolt to open ...

The 'secret' lies in a oddly shaped opening that the plug fills--A screwdriver won't allow the opening to be filled correctly
What I like to do is drill the cylinder with a smaller than usual bit & be careful to not let the plug split & if it does split
don't let the pieces fall out before you can turn them with your screwdriver. Last storage place disk lock that someone else
drilled and removed I wound up using my cut off wheel to simply remove one side of the top, allowing the entire lock to slip free
off the hasp, without opening the shackle

Most of the time my drill spins them open like magic.

Okay, I screwed around with this for awhile before I knew what I was doing. Normally I can get these things off by just picking the thing but like I said it was about -20 wind chill out i the storage yard and my hands were getting frozen.

So down here I had the time to look into the thing and this is what I found ...

Not the best photo but you will get the idea.

When the two halves of the plug came out they released the driving cam. Worse it floats around down there. Where is it?

Look deeply into the hole and you will see a "D" like thing, that is the driving cam. You need to get it skewered in a 3/8 screwdriver and centered in the hole behind it. Then it rolls over the shackle.

I guess I did it be accident Tuesday - but now I know what to turn, and where it is and the fact that it floats.

Right, this is what is supposed to keep people from easily drilling these locks. I like to use a small bit between 1/8
& 5/32-- that often keeps the plug intact

5/32" is a standard bit for drilling pin tumbler locks, it isn't undersized or oversized.
