Greetings to all at LP101
I acquired a large safe from eBay last year and am now getting around to spending some time trying to open it. I thought I’d start with the local safe company for insight on which direction to take. Their MO is to start by drilling it. That may ultimately be what happens, but it would take some of the fun out of it. I’ll have to clear a path to get good pics, but it is over 6 feet tall, 4 ft wide, and about 3ft to the wall. The Yale and Towne dial, last patent date 1895, is mounted about 6 inches directly above the right handle. When I was researching a bit back then, it seemed that this was described as an open gate style, but I haven’t been able to relocate any of the sites where I was finding info.
By my reckoning, this is not a safe cabinet , but an actual safe, as it took my 2 ton trailer completely down, and just doesn’t seem to share likenesses with safe cabinets.
I started stripping the olive green paint to find absolutely exotic pinstriping and a riverboat scene, which became largely obliterated before I could stop the stripper. Why such a beautiful job would be painted over is a topic for another day.
I’m sure it’s empty like most are, but I’m hopeful that there is more nice artwork inside, and maybe it will make a great liquor cabinet for the man cave I don’t have yet. Lol
I’m looking forward to gaining some knowledge here, and eventually get this thing opened.
