Huge boat anchor

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Huge boat anchor

Greetings to all at LP101
I acquired a large safe from eBay last year and am now getting around to spending some time trying to open it. I thought I’d start with the local safe company for insight on which direction to take. Their MO is to start by drilling it. That may ultimately be what happens, but it would take some of the fun out of it. I’ll have to clear a path to get good pics, but it is over 6 feet tall, 4 ft wide, and about 3ft to the wall. The Yale and Towne dial, last patent date 1895, is mounted about 6 inches directly above the right handle. When I was researching a bit back then, it seemed that this was described as an open gate style, but I haven’t been able to relocate any of the sites where I was finding info.
By my reckoning, this is not a safe cabinet , but an actual safe, as it took my 2 ton trailer completely down, and just doesn’t seem to share likenesses with safe cabinets.
I started stripping the olive green paint to find absolutely exotic pinstriping and a riverboat scene, which became largely obliterated before I could stop the stripper. Why such a beautiful job would be painted over is a topic for another day.
I’m sure it’s empty like most are, but I’m hopeful that there is more nice artwork inside, and maybe it will make a great liquor cabinet for the man cave I don’t have yet. Lol
I’m looking forward to gaining some knowledge here, and eventually get this thing opened.

You must be quite the drinker to think of using this as a liquor cabinet :D

sorry, we should have been clearer. Just showing a close up of the dial isnt gonna tell us how to get you into that safe or much about the safe specs. We need photos of the whole safe, the hinges, the corners, the wheels, the handles and how far and in which direction they are from the dial, those details help identify the maker of the safe. Imagine if you put a Kenwood stereo in your car and posted a picture of the Kenwood, but not of the entire dash board, it is very hard to then tell what make and model car it is in. Safe manufacturers often made the body but put in the dial and mechanism of another company that specialized in just making dials but not entire safes. So a Mosler safe might have a Yale dial, or a Cary safe might have a Sargent Greenleaf dial, or get this a Cary safe might have a dial marked Cary for marketing purposes but it's actually made my Sargent Greenleaf, it gets pretty confusing.

Thanks

I agree. I know that everything is a clue, so I took pics of the wheel, hinges, and dial, handle arrangements and even the artwork , but the only pic that I’ve managed to post is the one, and if I somehow stumble onto how I got that one up, I’ll be posting more. Very frustrating

Idk if half of the pics are making it up. It seems like the last link may be helpful. Each handle on the safe has a 5 digit number ( same on both) 13xxx

Hard to tell w/o a pic of the hinges but it's starting to look like a National.
