Not saying that any of it is stolen but on the off chance that it is your best bet would be to cover your butt. Most, if not all jurisdictions have a set period of time where items given to them have to be claimed otherwise they become the property of the finder. Wouldn't want you to end up in trouble for trying to sell stolen goods, now would we?

You dont know the entire story, so lets not jump to false conclusions, I know more of the story and can tell you its legit. Im gonna pull the pics from his post per his request though so people dont run wild with speculations.

Thanks. I already deleted the pics from imgur. I'll talk to some CA lawyers I know.

Your main concern will be probate court and notifying next of kin if there were any listed in any wills. There is probably a statute of limitations on how long any family members would have to claim or distribute any properties such as the safe contents so if enough time has passed it may all be yours clean and clear but Im no lawyer nor do I want to armchair lawyer you right now. Id say dont bother telling anyone and enjoy the loot. Its not like you found a million dollars. Just my opinion.

I'm not doubting that the OP's story is legitimate. All I'm saying is that whoever orignally put the pieces of jewelry in the safe may or may not have acquired them legally and that is something that I personally would look into before deciding what to do with said pieces.

Thanks. I'll talk to a lawyer on whether I have to report it or not.

Np man, just trying to save you from potential issues. I bought a house at auction once and had a similar issue, but in my case the valuables had been stashed behind a false partition in the linen closet. Turned out to have been from a string of break ins from the 1980's, no one claimed the items after 30 days and i was eventually allowed to keep everything. Never hurts to get things checked out.

Glad to hear you made out,
For the most part these abandoned safes are empty--For me about 9 out of 10
only had air in them & maybe a little rust, hard to see the expectant grins of many clients
turn sad in that moment when the door opens

Kudos to you WilsonTrucking--

That is very cool. Once found a wall vault. It had a box of 38 special ammo. Other than that it was empty.

Hello! My husband and I purchased a foreclosed property more than a decade ago. We're about to list it for sale and just found this safe hidden. I cannot believe this was here the whole time and we had no idea! Can either of the two that had success opening one pretty please share how with me? I am just starting to try to figure out how to open this thing and know nothing. I don't have this original safe code that was mentioned, can someone share? Thank you so much!

Hello and welcome,

We really need to see an actual photo of your safe before we help, those are the house rules as we do not want to give wrong advice on a safe that looks similar but may be a different model and we want to make sure someone is the owner and can take a photo with their screen name on a piece of paper next to it to verify themselves. The thread you replied to was also last active 2 years ago, so some of the key players may not be around these days.

Please upload photos to tinypic or photobucket or imgur or flickr and share the link here so we can have a better look at the whole door, the hinges, the dial or keypad, the handle, etc.

If it is a dial, does it turn smoothly or is it rusted shut? if it is a keypad, does it beep, or are the batteries dead? is there a key hole as well?

If it is the exact same one in the first photo, I can help you.

Thank you
