Acorn Cabinet "safe" lock reset

Hey guys, I found this old filing cabinet and threw it in my garage. I was wondering if it is possible to reset the lock on the dinky little safe thing built in it. It is an Acorn brand cabinet. If spun to the right it hits 6 just opens, if I spin it to the left it rolls, then "tings" and will just open at 6 again. When I roll it to the left the tab in the back will lift up instead of to the left when it opens the latch, I can take a small screwdriver and hold the tab up and the free spin the wheel either direction with no noise or action but it still always just opens at 6. This is probably super simple, but I cant figure it out. Thank you. P.S. this is the very first time I've ever posted in a forum, so go easy on me if I didnt do something correctly.

I don't know this lock. Perhaps someone had it disassembled and did not correctly assemble it. As there is no cover on the back you would need to remove the complete lock to have a look. That hole in the back is to find out the combination. So the combination is probably changeable.

That's what I was thinking about the hole. I removed the lock tonight, but didnt open it up. I put some tape down to hold the face of it on while I seated the screws to reinstall
it and when I removed it it took off some adhesive from some other person's tape that used the same trick , probably over 30 years ago ...

It seems like a really chinsy lock, but it has matching serial numbers front and back like they had some pride in the product. I cant find any info on the cabinet maker in general, but it seems like a cheap copy of other brands that were producing that style at the time.

It looks just like the Champion line of cabinets/locks.

I would be willing to bet that it is quite simple to set a combo. Unless, someone in the past has removed wheels so the only possible combo is 6. I am hoping that the original owner just set all wheels to 6. This can be a very simple process to someone familiar with it or very confusing to a complete novice.

On some of these locks simply rotating the dial 90 degrees and putting it back on will move all numbers 90 degrees also. This is the most simple combo change.

Take off the lock and lay the dial aside. The plate on the lock body should have screws holding it on to the body. Remove the screws. This should expose the combo wheels. Each wheel (probably 3) should have a part that can rotate and be put back down into a hole. Moving this part sets up a new combo on that wheel. Some locks similar to this one actually have numbers on the wheels so you can set the part onto a specific number. Until we see a photo of the insides we cannot be more detailed in the explanation.

Put the plate back on. Reassemble the dial. Looking through the hole on the back you can turn the dial and see when one wheel lines up with the fence ( the bar that moves into the 'gate' on each wheel). You must start with the first number of the combo and turn the dial the opposite direction to get to the second number. You will be viewing the second wheel through the gate of the first wheel. Look at the dial each tome to see what number is aligned with the fence for each wheel. Turn opposite again to get the last number. The dialing sequence will be: Right-3, Left-2, Right-1 to open.

I know this is a very minimal explanation. While you have the plate off the lock look at what happens and learn what it is doing. Good luck.

Absolutely! There are no combo wheels. You have your answer.

I think Raymond is correct - the two combination wheels have been removed.

It would not make sense to go to the cost and effort to make the lock the way it was made if there was no combination at all. A simple thumb turn would have sufficed and been much cheaper.

What you have is actually a postal lock, you can buy a new one

Years ago they were used on some light weight safes--I'm sure you can find one for less
money, Grainger's prices are high

Interesting! I was just about to ask if there was a replacement that would fit and actually work as a lock. Thanks for all the help guys!

There are a lot of "locker" type locks that might fit that footprint. Other than not matching areas of paint under the large front dial, you could use a combo or key locking type lock. Just a thought.

The paint underneath goes all the way to the edge of the mounting holes and center hole. I found the same lock from Grangers on amazon and ebay for significantly less. Do you have any leads on the locker style ones that might fit?
