Tubular pick problem

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Tubular pick problem

Postby lokpikr999 » 9 Sep 2020 13:07

I’m having a problem with my HPC Model B tubular pick and was wondering if you guys could help me out.Thing is I purchased a $7 tubular cam lock off of Amazon to mess around with, and despite trying for over 15 mins with varying amounts of tension on the feelers, I was unable to impression it with the tool.So just to see what was going on, I inserted the pick all the way in, withdrew it, and when I examined the feelers I noticed that many of them were being pushed deeper than the cuts on the key.So I took the collar off and probed each one of the feelers, and found that a couple of them were very loose(i.e. Could be slid up and down freely with no perceptible tension on them from the O-rings).So I tried swapping out the O-rings with ones I salvaged from an old broken tubular pick I had, yet that failed to rectify the issue, so I sent the tool back to HPC, and even though they claimed to have resolved the issue,(By tightening a set screw and cleaning it), when I received it back from them today, I found that those feelers were still loose, and again, was unable to impression the lock for the reason I specified earlier.

That sucks. Can you return the pick and get another one?

Can you push back the two loose feelers after a couple minutes you're impressioning the lock?

Cheers :)

I have used that same pick for over 20 years, the usual problem I have is when the o rings deteriorate, which they do from time to time. You need to get new o rings, instead of using old one's. I bought an o ring set from harbor freight but you may be able to get them from a hardware store. I also notice the tension nut needs to be fairly tight on my pick

Update:After thoroughly cleaning out the threads on the collar shaft(Which where FILTHY)with CRC QD spray and replacing the O-rings, I was able to pick the camlock P.S. Looking back, I think that the old O-rings were fine, all it needed was a good cleaning

It's nice you managed to find and solve the problem. It's always a pain sending back a tool and having to look fir a new one.

Cheers :)

I hate to say it, but the folks at HPC didn’t do s***(Also, they were unable to locate the package for nearly two weeks after it was delivered). When I received it, the only difference was that the collar had been tightened so much, that I had to grip it with a leather belt to unscrew it.Fortunately, I’m only out $8.50 for the postage(As they agreed not to make me pay any shipping fees to send if back as a courtesy for the inconvenience). But yes, when it comes to repair(Or even health related matters), I will always try to resolve the problem myself before dragging in the “professionals”.
