What are picks true dimensions?

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

What are picks true dimensions?

Postby Locknock » 30 Nov 2020 7:11

I am trying to make my own lock picks and I would like to 3D model them on a program.
That being said there are a lot of different types of picks and each one has different dimensions, however I cant find anything on the internet that would give me enough info to model them on my program.
Is there someone that can refer me to a site that can help me?

This old thread has some links to Autocad files from 5 years ago, I can't guarantee they all work viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61929

Most folks however make lock picks using templates or silhouettes by applying a decal and grinding and filing around it, search for pick templates here and there are plenty of threads, maybe it's what you're really after

Thread of templates: viewtopic.php?t=17326

Example template from one of the threads:

Not to mention that a single manufacturer will frequently offer the same profile pick in different thicknesses, and some even in differently angled or shaped versions of the picks.

When you add in the different manufacturers with different dimensions /shapes for their picks, there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of variants.

Each picker will find they wish this pick had a slimmer shank (very common complaint with lower-end picks), or wish the flag on the half diamond was slightly taller/shorter with steeper/shallower angles.

That is why many pickers end up modifying or making their own picks to meet their personal preferences.

Thanks the CAD files helped me a lot.
I didn't know that manufacturers use different types of dimensions for there picks but it definitely makes sense.
And I have a lot of templates but I do not know of a place I could grind the picks. I Know someone that can do laser cutting And I was hopping to ask her but at the moment I just want to design the tools and make sure what materials I want to use before I decide how I want to make them.

Any more advice?

Might be better to buy a set of picks for $25 and learn how to pick, and THEN make custom tools to fit your needs. It seems like you might be putting a huge roadblock in your own way before you even start learning how to pick locks.

The templates are to be used with things like hack saw blades, where you file and grind your own picks, you dont go take them somewhere to be done for you, the whole idea is to make your own picks right?

*I'm not trying to sound snarky either, just not seeing where you're coming from I guess..

I am attempting to design and make custom picks to improve my skills and for the fun of it.
I have been hobby picking on off for a couple of years, however recently with a lot of time on my hands I have improved a lot and would like to improve a lot more.
My pick set is actually quite decent but it is not made of the best quality of materials.
