Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Reset Kwikset / Weiser SmartKey Lock

Postby Kenneth_V » 10 Jan 2021 22:27

Hope this is ok to post here.

Here is a DIY solution I made for resetting a Kwikset or Weiser SmartKey when you do not have a working key.

Without having to take the cylinder apart or purchase a tool.

Not a long lasting tool but works well if you don't need an everyday solution.

Good work, Comb Picks work as well, Ran into a house that had 10 locks, Smart Key, Keyed Same. Took One apart, used Depth/Space keys to determine Biting.
Made a Key. Keeps from dissembling all.
Am an Electric/Security Contractor, carry minimal Locksmithing tools, when I run into one, I usually take apart, align the sliders with the groove. Works good. Forget if I tried while apart to apply tension, push in binding pieces till it turns 90°, then Rekey.

You have to treat it like using a comb pick.

Do not apply tension until you bottom out the pins.

Push the pins all the way down THEN try to rotate the core.

If the core does not begin to rotate, release tension, push all the pins down evenly until they bottom out, then try to rotate again. It will pinch the teeth of the comb as it rotates. Pull the comb out and finish rotating the core to 90.

Since A1 went out of business, I made one of the resetter tools from a wide wiper insert.

I copied my better resetter onto a steel key blank so I wouldn't lose it in my van

Good idea, billdeserthills. I may do exactly that. One for Kwikset Smartkey and one for Schlage SecureKey.

I bought a box of the blue reset keys before Schlage's Securekey was sued out of existence

Is the difference between them(SC1) and the blue key, a slider cut milled along the side? I forget

The Schlage reset key isn't machined as far as a regular C key
