Starter-Set

Postby mbauer588 » 22 Aug 2021 3:00

Hello,

I would want to try out lockpicking as a hobby and I watched a few videos on that toppic and I came up with that set for me:

Southord C810 + Multipick W04 and BOG03 for the picks
and a cheap Amazon-Set for a few tentioners + 4 transparent locks to see how different locks work.

What do you think? Is that a good setup?

My idea was to have a
  • L-, S-, Bogota-, worm-rake for rocking and raking attacks
  • half diamond for zipping attacks and maybe also dimple locks
  • ball-rake for wafer locks
  • medium- and deep-hook + def. diamond/ball for single pin picking

I am expecting that give me the most common tools to try and good quality tools.

Are the cheap tentioners form a chineese kit OK or should I better get other ones?

I am in europe - I found a lot of recommandations for easy locks in the USA like the Masterlock 03 and some others. I have never seen them here. What are good choices in Europe to start with and what would be a good gradually increasing set to begin with?

Used Wiper Blades are Stainless and different Widths, A grinder can modify and Improve them.

I know that but I live in a flat and grinding some wiper blades in the living-room or in my office don't sound really great to me. I know you can mod tools or make your own but I lack the tools and space to do so.

I was more concerned about my selection of picks - as far as my research go I can attack with that selection a wire range of locks and try out the most common attacks.
Or did I overlook something important?

Forget the transparent locks. Get a cheap double cylinder and disassemble it to start with just a few pins. Picking is about feeling the pins, not seeing them.

Your selection of picks is good. I started with a hook and a half diamond. Those should get you going for months if you don't bend them.

Get an assortment of tension wrenches. You can make yours with just pliers and a flat file. I did some of mine in my old kitchen. Get old wiper blades or a couple bicycle spokes, no grinding required. Just an old newspaper to protect the top and collect the metal filings.

Good luck :)

I knot it's about feeling but I can cover them up and always when I lost track I can check what I think I did and what I actually did. So I guess gutting them and repinning is a good way to learn and I can make a ton of bitings and add security pins.

I can also go with a training cylinder but I where thinking I get a lot more types of locks and the same affect with the acryllic ones.

You can cover them up, but it will still feel less like a real lock.

However, if you want the transparent lock because you think it looks cool, then get it.

No I want them to learn picking and when that don't feel like a real lock then it make no sence.
What would be better? A repinable cutaway lock?

I want something what I can pick blind and when I don't get it open or when I run into trouble I can look what cause that. So I can check what cause that what I feel in the lock or what was the mistake I made that I can't open it up. Basically a learning tool but it must be easy repinnable and I want to be able to see inside.

What about that one?

You don't really want to see the pins. Any method of making a lock see-able is going to change the way it picks. I don't recommend practicing in the firing range with the sun at your back 1 foot from the target if in the field you'll be shooting with the sun in your eyes at 100m away  . My personal favorite way to do what you're asking for is by back shimming the lock to reduce pins when it's too hard and confirm when you are indeed at the sheer line. It's the least amount of effort and cost. You can raise the pin up and push the shim in from the back. You can make your own shims from security pins.

OK I can try. I found the following locks:

Abus Titalium 64TI/30HB60
Noname eurocylinder for 6 EUR
Yale 500
Apollo 40 padlock
RV POSEIDON 40 padlock

Except the Titalium (which should be famous beginner locks) I could not find infos on the others if they are easy to pick. Does anyone know them? I just see a video that the Poseidon is not shielded and you can bypass it with a pick or knive and directly turn the locking mechanism.

I guess as lower the price as lower die security and as easier to pick.

I'd recommend a standard Kwikset deadbolt from the hardware store (you don't need a mount/bench vise to hold them, though most prefer it.) The reason I recommend Kwikset is it's common as a beginner to get your pick hung up on something other than the pin, and it's one of the only ways to break a pick. The Kwikset KW1 keyway has a lot of vertical room for your pick to function and it's cheap. It's a great beginner lock and prepares you for lockouts as a lot of residential locks are KW1.

Also, info on rekeying these locks:

I don't use a "pickle fork" I still use the keedex master follower and CLK pinning tweezers cledry recommended when I started. They work fine for most locks you run into. Can use markers and normal tweezers in place of these as well.

My problem is I am living in czech republic and I don't get some of that locks here. I need an european one. I don't find the famous Master 3 padlock nor that ones you mentioned here and order it from USA would take a while and spihhing and cusoms will cost 5-10x the price of a lock. So that make no sence at all.

YouLuckyFox, your suggestion is good, but the OP is from Europe, it's not easy to find a kwikset.

mbauer588, I'd try the cheap 6 euro cylinder or the yale 500.

Cheers :)
