DiamondBack truck bed cover.

Postby Raymond » 22 Sep 2021 22:46

I was asked to look at the non-working lock on a Diamondback truck bed cover. The pin on back of the key plug, that moves the bolt in and out, has broken off or worn out. But, now I cannot figure out how to remove the plug. There are no poke holes. I have tried hook-picking it out with no success. It still bothers me that I could not get it out. Any ideas? Experience rules!

Even if I had gotten it out I had no replacement for it.

Just a comment. The strength and quality of this lock was amazing. It is too bad they used only a 5-wafer, convenience key for the minimal security on an otherwise great bed cover.

Was there a small hole right on the edge of the face of the core? That is for removal of these plugs. But even then they can give you fits. If it has this, turn the plug 90 degrees, insert a pin with a chisel point ground onto the end. The "slope" the point will act as a ramp. Once bottomed out in the hole, rotate the pin. The retainer clip should depress as it "rides" along the ramp and depresses.
Some of these have no access to the retainer. It is a blind retainer and not intended to be removed. Many of the cheap ones are like this, just replace the entire thing. I hope this is of some help.

I've been looking all over & still haven't seen a pic of a Diamondback lock & the manufacturer doesn't even sell the locks online, far as I can tell

I am familiar with the side channel to push in the retainer. It just doesn't have one. I am willing to believe that there is a retainer but do not know where to drill for it. Thanks for the thought.

Saw a couple YouTube Videos of Installing the Diamondback, may show something Helpfull.
Checking someone else's may help.
Wonder if you could drill out and retract rods through the locks hole.
