For nice rivets, you can use 1" (2cm) brass nails with some brass washers. Trim off the excess and use the peen on a ballpeen hammer to mushroom it down.
Most hardware or home improvement stores have the two-part expoxy putty that works well and holds up nice.
I've made some really good shapeable "plastic" out of milk and vinegar, it doesn't stink at all, but man that stuff is easy to work with. PM me if you want the recipe. Good stuff, but easy to make.
