I imagine you're thinking of a room with a set of stalls. I never saw anything like that. Either a turnstile setup to get into a bathroom area, or individual rooms, each with a pay to enter device. Where there was a turnstile, there was a person to make sure no one either jumped over, or did the reverse turn to enter. And IMHO fifty cents to use a maintained bathroom is cheap and I'd happily support that in the US as well. There are far too many places where you've got to rely on the local coffee cafe to let you use their bathroom. In my area we now see such bathrooms controlled by a punchcode and you need to ask the barista for the code. This to keep the non-customers out.
