Old Mosler Safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Mosler Safe

Hello. Years ago we moved into the house of a woman who died and we recently found a small black Mosley safe built into the wall in a closet. The house is over 200 years old. We asked the owners son about it and he did not remember it/ is sure it is empty because all of her possessions were accounted for/ assumes she never knew it was there. Now we are intrigued! We want to try opening it. Why would it be locked if there is nothing inside? It has the numbers: 427015 on the knob. Any tips? Thank you

Hi, Combos are most often forgotten, when there is nothing of value inside. Nobody bothers to set the combo to a default combo when all gold is removed from a safe. So if there is a safe with unknown combo and content, then it is most often empty. If it is not empty than it is most of the time some stuff without value. In very rare cases there is something of value inside, e.g. a pack of silver dollars.

You can get a safe tech to open that safe for you. A list is here https://www.savta.org/savta_tech.php , but I am sure the contents won't cover the costs. You can also try to open the safe yourself. Look up "safe manipulation". You can also use power tools to destroy it.

According to the serial the safe should be from 1943.

The serial number can help date the safe, but there isn't like a database we can check for you to give you the combination the safe came with from the factory a 100 years ago. The Mosler company went bankrupt in 2000 and the records were never made public or were lost to time.

If you could share photos we could give you more info about your safe, how many wheels the lock may have and possibly some instructions for testing the state of the lock.

Thank you so much for replying. This is so fun! I bet there is nothing inside this safe but it is so thrilling to try to solve the mystery! Now I am debating if I should cut it open or call the safe hacker. Will keep you posted.

Did you remove the hinge and handle?

Please know that this can be very dangerous for when you actually open the door and it falls out and crushes your foot. Safes were made so that simply removing or cutting the hinges will not be enough to open the door.

Could you post a wider photo of the safe?

Thanks!
