I am putting the cover back , still not opening. I can line them up manually and it opens.

I tried putting the cover on and redoing it.
Nothing
I lined up the plates manually and opened the bolts.

I think I figured it out. The cover is not going on all the way because of the small pin on the bottom not going into the hole in the cover plate. Therefore not allowing the cover to seat all the way to depress the safety lock

I filed the little nub slightly to get the cover to fit on and locked it down well. Still the gate is not falling into place on its own. turning to zero is not helping either.

The gates of the wheels might be sitting to high so that the undersides are blocking the fence to drop. If you position the drive cam correctly and then move by hand the whole wheel pack down (clockwise when locking from the inside), does then the fence drop?

Yes, when I remove the cover and depress the steel tab with a screw driver, then after moving the wheels to the right the fence falls in.

That 'steel tab' sounds like a relocker, built into the combo lock. If the cover of the lock comes off, that keeps the safe from opening.

I dialed the combo with back cover removed. They all lined up properly letting me know the combo was correct. Then I replaced the back cover and tried to turn the know to have the gate drip i to place. Nothing. Then tried the same combo with the cover on tight still nothing. Not sure what to do now.

If it opens while you are holding the relocker in with a screwdriver but not with the back cover on, then perhaps the trigger pin on the back cover is worn down or broken off.

May we see the inside of the back cover.

Removing a relocker is possible but it would be a shame to alter a lock that old if the problem can be solved in a better manner.

The pin looks fine. The gate just doesn't fall into the slots

I notice there is a spring on your gate, how is it holding up?

Have you tried dialing the combination while using a screwdriver or flat tipped punch to hold down the relocker? It may be affecting the gate location by a number or two.

And I agree with billdeserthills' question about the lever spring.

Thank You All
Later today I will start from scratch to find the combo.
Question- When all the wheel gates are lined up Should the lever fit in the center of the slot? How much leeway is there on finding the right numbers?

Yes there is a very light spring and it seems to be working fine but light.
Even when I have the relocker pushed in with a screwdriver the lever does not fall into the slots.

the pin on the back cover seems pretty new looking but cant tell how much it is depressing the relocker. I wish I had the safe up on a platform.
thanks again.
